That was her private place! If word of it got out, how would she ever face anyone? But then she thought of how she had later barged into the washroom and seen Yang Ce bathing—the two things just about evened out. Still, why did Xia Xue feel she had come off the worse?
Xia Xue knew Yang Ce was tired, but some things could not be skipped just because one was tired. As one of the key parties involved, Yang Ce had to go with Xia Xue to the police station to give a statement.
Yang Shuo Xuan knew this was a necessary procedure, so he made no objection.
"Uncle Zhong, Xia Xue and I have some business at the police station. You go back to my godfather's place first; I'll be along a little later," Yang Ce said, greeting Zhong Hanlin.
"Yang Ce, I expect we'll both be back late. I can't get away either—these doctors want to discuss scholarship with me and insist on keeping me here for dinner," Zhong Hanlin said with a wry smile.
"All right, then—we'll keep in touch by phone." Even before Zhong Hanlin boarded his plane, Liu Yan had given him Yang Juehuan's number, and of course had given Yang Ce Zhong Hanlin's number as well.
Zhong Hanlin nodded and went back to discussing academic questions with the doctors.
"Where's the gun?" Once in the car, Xia Xue looked at Yang Ce and asked.
"What gun?" Yang Ce asked, feigning ignorance.
"The one Wang Lin was holding after he shot Zhou Yanning," Xia Xue snorted. "Don't tell me you didn't see it. Concealing a firearm is a serious crime—hand it over now."
"Hell, you mean that gun? How would I know where it went?" Yang Ce said indifferently. "Yang Ce, let me warn you—don't go thinking you can get lucky. Captain Chen called me just now. They didn't find that gun at the scene," Xia Xue threatened.
Yang Xutang shrugged and spread his hands. "There were so many people there—who knows who took it. Search me if you don't believe me. I've noticed you're always suspecting me these days. What was the situation like back then? How could I have paid attention to where that gun went?"
"All right, I believe you." Xia Xue knew how chaotic things had been and that the odds of Yang Ce having gotten his hands on the gun were minuscule. Besides, they were on their way to the police station now—if the gun were on him, he would have nowhere to hide it.
But what did Yang Ce do for a living? He was an assassin—and hiding guns was precisely what assassins were best at. They could stash a gun anywhere and no one would ever find it.
Just moments ago, Yang Ce had hidden the gun in the hospital restroom. Unless someone went in there specifically to search, it would be very hard to find—likely impossible for anyone but Yang Ce himself.
Yang Ce had kept the pistol for a number of reasons. First, it was a smuggled weapon with no registration, which made it handy for getting things done. Once the current matter died down, the bullet in Zhou Yanning's head would be sealed away as evidence, and tracing the ballistics and rifling marks would become extremely difficult. Second, he planned to issue the gun to Hou Lin and the others so they could get a feel for it. Even if they never fired it, they could pull it out to scare people, and it would give them some swagger when negotiating.
Since the officers who took Yang Ce's statement at the police station were all Chen Fei's subordinates, and Xia Xue was there to help clarify things, there was no question of them giving Yang Ce a hard time.
Moreover, in that brief span of time, Wang Pu had already confessed everything. So Yang Juehuan's statement no longer carried much weight. Wang Pu knew that having come in this time, he would certainly never be getting out, and he had resigned himself to certain death.
Though anyone with eyes could see that Yang Puqi had contributed the most to this case, Yang Jiyan showed not the slightest desire to claim credit. On the contrary, he repeatedly asked that it be handled quietly and that his parents absolutely not be told.
