So it was precisely because of this thought that Wang Lin could only endure his torment in silence.
At noon the nanny returned and made a little food. After Zhou Yanning and Wang Lin had eaten something together, Zhou Yanning rose to take his leave, saying he would come back tomorrow.
Since Zhou Yanning had matters to attend to, Wang Lin could hardly press him to stay. As things stood, the relationship between him and Zhou Yanning was the kind that looked good on the surface yet remained distant at heart.
Yang Ce and Chen Shutang arrived at the terminus of the subway line—Dongfang Auto City, the largest automobile market in Songjiang City. Though perhaps it should no longer be called Songjiang City, since the place had actually been built with capital from an entrepreneur over in Donghai City.
It was simply that Donghai's urban districts no longer had any large plots of land on which to build an auto city; and even if they did, the price would not have been worth it. So it was better to build the auto city on the outskirts of Songjiang City, which bordered Donghai. That way the auto city sat as it were between Donghai and Songjiang, convenient for people from both cities to reach.
This was in fact what many cities did—building their auto cities out in the suburbs.
Yang Ce and Chen Shutang arrived at the auto city and wandered about at their leisure. This place took the form of showrooms, with each brand having its own hall, though the variety of cars was quite complete—nearly every brand sold in the country could be found here. Of course, some people still preferred to go to the dedicated 4S dealerships of each brand to buy their cars; that was simply a matter of personal habit.
"Wow, this car's not bad—it'd suit a girl nicely," Chen Shutang said, pointing at a compact SUV.
The moment Yang Ce and Chen Shutang came to a stop, a saleswoman immediately hurried over: "Are you two here to look at a car?"
By now the prices of most domestic car brands had dropped to a very low level, with most cars in the tens-of-thousands range. In other words, cars were no longer something only the big bosses could afford; they had entered the wage-earning class.
So unlike the saleswomen pushing luxury cars, who still looked down their noses at customers, the sales staff for domestic cars paid little heed to how a visitor was dressed or how old they were—because anyone at all might become a potential customer.
"Yeah, just looking around," Yang Yuting nodded. "What car is this?"
"This one is the Zotye 5008, a mini compact off-roader—very suitable for families and young couples. The car is small in size, but it doesn't fall short in appearance or function. It even has a roof rack up top, good for picnics and long road trips," the saleswoman explained. "Over there is the previous model of this car, the Zotye 2008. The 5008 is an improvement on it."
"How much?" Yang Yanchuan asked.
"The luxury edition is fifty-nine thousand nine hundred and ninety-nine, with full-car window tinting, a roof rack, and small accessories included," the saleswoman said.
Only sixty thousand yuan—Yang Ce nodded to himself. This car was good: cheap, practical, and not showy when you drove it out. Most importantly, it looked good, and Chen Shutang could drive it too.
"All right, we'll look around a bit more," Yang Minlan told the saleswoman.
"Certainly. Here's our promotional material—feel free to take it and have a look," the saleswoman said, handing Yang Ce a brochure.
Yang Ce took it and held it in his hand as he walked with Chen Shutang toward the other displays.
"What do you think?" Yang Yanchuan asked Chen Shutang.
"I think it's quite nice. I could drive it too," Chen Shutang said. It was clear she rather liked the car they had just seen.
"But it's a manual transmission," Yang Ce observed. In his view, girls driving cars should all prefer automatics.
