But Little Bai's pair of watery eyes, seemingly made to steal a man's soul, held Shangguan Lue fast, clear and unhurried, and even he was not at all sure he could escape her grasp.
This was truly a case of walls on every side—a dead end.
Shangguan Lue's face was ashen, and across his features flitted one expression after another—resentment, fury, dread, anxiety—and Little Bai, watching it all, was greatly delighted.
She had been imprisoned by the whole company of Fenxia Valley in the Profound Fire Altar for many years. Had Ming Li not accidentally broken the seal, she truly did not know whether she would have spent her whole life in that cursed place—the misery of it was truly hard to put into words. So in Little Bai's heart, her hatred for Shangguan Lue and the rest of Fenxia Valley was extreme. Though after she and Ming Li had fled that day, she had come to a certain profound realization and had not deliberately gone back to make trouble for Fenxia Valley—now that Shangguan Lue had practically delivered himself before her eyes, how could she possibly pretend not to see?
To be merciful and kind to others—those were things the Nine-Tailed Celestial Fox did when she was in a good mood. But she had never been a Bodhisattva who forgot others' faults and treated all with forbearance.
At the thought of her satisfaction, Little Bai could not help laughing aloud. The grievances of so many years—tonight it seemed they were all being released, and it was truly gratifying.
Shangguan Lue's mood, naturally, was nowhere near as good as Little Bai's. On the contrary, his injuries seemed already impossible to suppress; his whole body began to tremble faintly, the ghostly power of the Yin Phantom surged upward, and a faint blue radiance cloaked his back.
Little Bai's smile deepened. Shangguan Lue's panting grew more and more rapid. Suddenly he took several steps toward Little Bai. Her brows knitted slightly, and a trace of wariness appeared on her face—for though Shangguan Lue was in dire straits and wounded, this man's cultivation was after all no small thing, and Little Bai dared not be overly careless.
But then something utterly inconceivable happened in the blink of an eye.
Shangguan Lue's face was a mask of agony, veins bulging on his brow—it looked as though his injuries had erupted and he could hold out no longer. Then, his eyes rolled white, a flicker of terror crossed his face, and with a thud he actually dropped to his knees before Little Bai, pleading, "Immortal Fox Lady, spare my life!"
Had Shangguan Lue unleashed some world-shaking divine art, Little Bai would most likely have gathered herself to meet it; even had he suddenly shouted and thirty or fifty Fenxia Valley experts leapt out from the sides, she could have accepted that reality.
But this old man suddenly kneeling and begging for mercy overturned everything she had known of him. For a moment, even with her thousand years of cultivation, she was dumbstruck, at a loss what to do.
Yet that stupor lasted only an instant before Little Bai came to her senses—Shangguan Lue had schemed deliberately, stooping to such self-abasement, all for the sake of this brief opening.
In that instant, the Shangguan Lue who had seemed at death's door was like a different man. Killing intent blazed across his whole face, the expression of agony vanished entirely, and even the blue halo on his back was suppressed in the blink of an eye. The Nine-Cold Condensing Ice Spike flashed silver, like a startled dragon streaking across the sky, and with a "boom" it flew upward from beneath his hand, driving straight at Little Bai's chest.
