Chapter 3932 — What in the World Is Going On?
And so it proved. Just like the earlier duel between the Ghost-Eye Golden Eagle and the Butterfly Queen, this match likewise ended in mutual ruin—the difference being that the previous one had been decided almost the instant they clashed, whereas this one had dragged on into a war of attrition.
Both sides' talents were thoroughly nasty, neither had any good answer for the other, and so it naturally turned into a contest of patience and stamina. In the end, Li Zhengming's Ghost Tiger edged out the victory, advancing with wounds all over its body.
At last the list of the strong was finalized: Wei Zhao's Thunder Pig, which had never once taken the stage; Meng Zhou's Blackback Staff Ape; Li Zhengming's Ghost Tiger; and the Firefox Wolf of yet another newcomer.
When the results of the third-round draw came out, the newcomers who had waited so long finally got their chance to watch Wei Zhao make a fool of himself—because this time his opponent was none other than Li Zhengming's Ghost Tiger.
That earlier battle had laid the Ghost Tiger's strength bare in full. Frankly, even the utterly self-assured Meng Zhou had broken into a cold sweat watching it; at peak condition, not even his Blackback Staff Ape could necessarily have handled this Ghost Tiger of Li Zhengming's.
And not only the Ghost Tiger—Qiao Hongcai's Ghost-Eye Golden Eagle, Murong Zhen's Butterfly Queen, and Xiao Che's Bewitching-Eye Tyrant Rabbit were all equally troublesome existences, every one of them capable of posing a real threat to Meng Zhou's Blackback Staff Ape.
Fortunately, these troublesome creatures had all butchered one another ahead of time. In that respect, Meng Zhou's luck was really quite decent—not quite up to Wei Zhao's bizarre, dog-shit fortune of drawing byes round after round, but not far off either.
This time, Wei Zhao's luck had finally run out. Even wounded from a mutual-ruin scrap, Li Zhengming's Ghost Tiger could still make mincemeat of his "pathetic" Thunder Pig without breaking a sweat.
Li Zhengming was no Zha Wu, that useless wretch who did not even own a spirit pet, and he was certainly no lackey of Wei Zhao's. So in everyone's estimation, the same trick might work once, might work twice, but never a third time—there was no way Li Zhengming would let Wei Zhao advance for free.
This round was bound to be the death of that idiot Thunder Pig. Wei Zhao, that pompous poseur, could just wait to spit blood!
Under the crowd's eager gaze, Wei Zhao's Thunder Pig finally stepped onto the arena for the first time. Looking at that simple, muddle-headed face, Meng Jueming and Meng Zhou and the rest could not help their brows twitching violently—this one utterly combat-incapable creature had somehow fought its way all the way into the final four. Where in the world was the justice in that?
Fortunately, when Li Zhengming's Ghost Tiger once again mounted the arena, everyone instantly cheered up. This time they could finally restore their psychological balance!
An idiot pig is an idiot pig. Even with a frightfully high Heaven-rank grand-completion level, it could not change its useless nature—before the Ghost Tiger, it was nothing but a piece of trash with no power to resist.
It was with these lovely expectations that Meng Jueming and the others awaited the coming show. Yet the referee had barely announced the start and the drama was just about to begin when something happened on the arena that left every last one of them dumbstruck.
The majestic, awe-inspiring Ghost Tiger, face to face with the utterly harmless Thunder Pig, went weak in the knees and knelt down in public before everyone's eyes.
What the hell! Meng Jueming and the others were instantly beside themselves with fury. What in the world was going on here?
Such a twist left even the referee blinking in a daze. It was a good while before he came to his senses, climbed onto the stage to check the Ghost Tiger's aura, and then, with a face caught between laughter and tears, spread his hands and declared: "The Ghost Tiger has fallen unconscious from severe injuries. Therefore the winner of this match is the Thunder Pig!"
At those words, Meng Jueming and the others were struck completely dumb, unable to speak for a long, long while.
Otherwise, how could a person's luck be so damned uncanny? To let a combat-incapable idiot pig, without doing a single thing, win three rounds in a row and go all the way into the final match?
"Junior Brother Lin, your luck really leaves a man speechless—I'm thoroughly convinced!" Even the long-suffering senior brother wore a look of utter disbelief. The day's events seemed as though scripted in advance; even seeing them with his own eyes, he felt it was all unreal.
Wei Zhao smiled faintly and made no reply.
If the first two rounds had truly been luck, then this third round—Li Zhengming's Ghost Tiger collapsing—was not pure luck at all. Wei Zhao could guarantee with absolute certainty that Li Zhengming had secretly given the Ghost Tiger its orders.
True, in the previous match the Ghost Tiger and the Bewitching-Eye Tyrant Rabbit had fought bitterly to the bitter end, but with the Ghost Tiger's formidable constitution, so long as it had not collapsed on the spot, there was no chance it would afterwards lose without a fight.
This was Li Zhengming deliberately going easy on Wei Zhao. In his present position as an undercover agent, he could not openly concede defeat the way Qiao Hongcai had; he could only use this method, one that no one could find fault with, to "be forced" into conceding on his own initiative.
"I never would have thought it—a pompous poseur who deserves to be struck by lightning, and heaven knows how many piles of dog shit you had to eat to get luck like that!" Meng Zhou sneered with a savage look on his face. "But it doesn't matter. Your dog-shit luck ends here. Just as we agreed before, my Blackback Staff Ape is going to tear that idiot pig of yours apart with its own hands. Wait to spit blood!"
"Heh heh, you never know until you try, do you? Maybe in a little while you'll discover that you're the idiot who ends up swallowing dog shit," Wei Zhao said with an indifferent smile, then signaled the Thunder Pig to take the stage.
Oink oink! The Thunder Pig snorted once, then leaped back onto the arena. Combat was not among its talents, but for Wei Zhao's sake, it was still willing to give its all against this opponent.
At the same time, at Meng Zhou's signal, the Blackback Staff Ape slowly strode onto the arena, radiating an aura of overbearing power.
Bang! The dark-iron staff was casually planted against the ground, and several finger-wide cracks split the hard stone slab on the spot—a fine display of just how immense the Blackback Staff Ape's strength was.
"Blackback Staff Ape, hurry up and tear this idiot pig apart alive for your master! Let it learn what a true powerhouse spirit pet looks like—let it die with its eyes open!" Meng Zhou bellowed from beneath the arena.
