Chapter 3155 — Dealing with Lin Dongfang
"Oh? So he's just some country bumpkin. Then we can just send any Yellow-rank expert and be done with it, can't we?" Ancestor Huangquan said carelessly.
"That won't do," Flying Cat said with a shake of his head. "What if Wei Zhao comes back?"
"True enough. In that case, Ancestor Gloom and I will go ourselves. We'll kill the old man first, then wait for Wei Zhao to come knocking and meet his death!" Originally, Ancestor Huangquan had been quite wary of going into the secular world to move against Wei Zhao. After all, the Blood-Robe Huangquan Sect was not like the ancient sects. Among assassins, there was no such thing as vengeance—once you took a contract, it was kill or be killed. If the assassins' guild also joined in vendettas, the whole order would descend into chaos!
However, because Wei Zhao was a lone cultivator and the initial investigation had revealed no faction behind him, the Blood-Robe Huangquan Sect had chosen to retaliate—but even this was done covertly. If it were ever brought out into the open, the other ancient sects would not be pleased!
You of the Blood-Robe Huangquan Sect come to kill; if I happen to be strong enough to survive, will you then send an endless stream of men to keep coming after me? That plainly violates the original purpose of a contract and throws the rules into disorder!
Moreover, the Blood-Robe Huangquan Sect was not permitted to act within the secular world. This was not merely a rule at the ancient level, but also a forced promise the Blood-Robe Huangquan Sect had made back in the day—a promise made to the secular world's assassins' guild: never to overstep the boundary, never to encroach upon the secular world's underworld of killers.
It sounded a little absurd—that the Blood-Robe Huangquan Sect, an ancient sect standing high above, would actually compromise with a secular assassins' organization? And yet compromise it had!
There was no other reason: the greatest assassins' organization in the secular world was run by Mr. Yang, one of the two ruthless figures who had swept across the ancient level in those years—one half of the Twin Vajras. Facing this Mr. Yang, the Blood-Robe Huangquan Sect—Blood-Robe and Huangquan's own master, the King of Assassins of the cultivation world—had no choice but to bow his head and follow Mr. Yang out of the Blood-Robe Huangquan Sect.
Though the departure of the cultivation world's King of Assassins was known throughout the ancient level, the fact that Mr. Yang was the King of Assassins of the secular world was known to no one. This was an internal secret of the assassin trade, and without Mr. Yang's permission, the Blood-Robe Huangquan Sect dared not rashly make it public.
Besides, it was hardly a glorious matter—the cultivation world's assassins' organization bowing to the secular world's assassins' organization was simply unthinkable, a tale fit for the Arabian Nights!
Granted, those two ruthless figures had vanished for more than ten years, and the other ancient levels and hidden levels had gradually begun to forget the negative fallout those two had brought. Still, if they could kill Wei Zhao without breaking the promise made back then, that would be for the best.
After all, in the hearts of Huangquan and Blood-Robe, those two ruthless halves of the Twin Vajras had already cast a shadow over them! The Western Star Mountain Village was remote and out of the way, scarcely part of the secular world at all. Killing Wei Zhao's kin there and luring Wei Zhao in to kill him would not count as breaking the promise made that year!
"How about... letting Ancestor Blood-Robe join the hunt as well? You and he are both peak late-stage Heaven-rank, great-perfection experts. Even if Wei Zhao is uncanny, with the three of us attacking together, Wei Zhao will have no choice but to die!" Ancestor Gloom suggested, rather cautiously.
"Fine. Ancestor Blood-Robe is about to come out of seclusion anyway. It'll do him good to get out, stretch his legs, and kill a few people—not a bad choice at all." Ancestor Huangquan pondered for a moment, then nodded in agreement.
"In that case, Wei Zhao will find it hard to escape death even if he wishes to!" Ancestor Gloom laughed a grim, sinister laugh.
The Xuandan Sect.
Having finalized his plan, Kang Jingming went to find Little Peach Blossom once again.
On the surface, Little Peach Blossom seemed to have noticed nothing amiss, still wearing the look of a girl eagerly looking forward to a future with Kang Jingming. In her heart, however, she was utterly disillusioned with the man.
"Brother Kang, you called Little Peach Blossom here—is that matter all settled? What do you need Little Peach Blossom to do?" Little Peach Blossom asked eagerly.
"It's like this: a very good opportunity has come up. I'm arranging for you to go to Doctor Guan's Pharmaceutical and become Kang Xiaofeng's secretary!" Kang Jingming said. "Kang Xiaofeng's previous secretary resigned, and the company is hiring right now. But it requires some knowledge of pharmacology—and you fit the bill perfectly. You have professional research in medicinal herbs and pharmacology, so I'm sure applying for this position will pose no difficulty for you at all! A secretary's work is just helping out and serving, and you're already the Young Sect Master's maidservant at the Xuandan Sect, so this sort of thing will be second nature to you!"
Kang Jingming had originally been racking his brains over how to get Little Peach Blossom over to Kang Xiaofeng's side and close to Kang Xiaofeng. He had meant to resort to some scheme or other, but then this opportunity had suddenly appeared before his eyes, delighting him beyond measure—it was as if it had been tailor-made for Little Peach Blossom!
In truth, Doctor Guan's Pharmaceutical had fallen into crisis some time ago, and the secretary at Kang Xiaofeng's side—someone hired through connections—had, owing to her poor judgment, decided that Doctor Guan's Pharmaceutical would never recover, and so submitted her resignation.
Because of the company's precarious situation, Kang Xiaofeng had not bothered to hire a new secretary—until the automatic first-grade medicinal cauldron from Liu Jinghan's side began selling like hotcakes, putting Doctor Guan's Pharmaceutical back on track. Only then, once Lai the Fatty and Kang Xiaofeng could finally catch their breath, did they begin recruiting anew to fill the posts vacated by employees who had left during the company's crisis—among them Kang Xiaofeng's secretary.
This handed Kang Jingming a perfect opportunity. Without the slightest effort, he could send Little Peach Blossom off, and he didn't even need to invent a story.
"All right, I'll go apply right away. But the Young Sect Master's side—how am I supposed to ask for leave?" Little Peach Blossom nodded hastily and asked, "And so, this way, I won't have to let myself be taken advantage of?"
"That won't do at all. Haven't you heard the saying? When the boss has business, the secretary does it; when he has none, he does the secretary. If you don't let yourself be taken advantage of, how will you get close to Kang Xiaofeng, make him trust you absolutely, and thereby steal the technical data for the automatic first-grade medicinal cauldron?" Kang Jingming shook his head. "It's fine, I won't hold it against you—consider it a sacrifice made on my behalf, Little Peach Blossom. Off you go, and don't worry!"
A wave of sorrow washed through Little Peach Blossom's heart. If Tian Chan had not opened her eyes to Kang Jingming's true, hideous face, she might well have been bewitched by him even now and believed every word he said!RS
