Chapter 2961 — The Silkworm Mutation Arrives
Zhao Qibing sneered. "And don't think that having a heaven-rank expert on your side will stop me. I will still dare to act. If you dare to lay a hand on me, that is a provocation against the entire Dark Night Palace, and when that happens, the Dark Night Palace will have every reason to wipe out every last one of you. Even the other ancient sects would not stand in the way of the Dark Night Palace's vengeance!"
There was no denying the venom in Zhao Qibing's words. If Wei Zhao refused, he would go after Gu Mengyao and Shen Yushu, and he threatened that Wei Zhao's people must not strike back—for to strike back would be open provocation of the ancient sect, the Dark Night Palace, and would bring down annihilation upon them.
Had Wei Zhao not been injured, even knowing himself no match for the Dark Night Palace, he would never have swallowed such humiliation. But now, a man under another's eaves must bow his head, and against such barefaced thuggery, Wei Zhao truly had no way out.
Just then, Gu Mengyao and Shen Yushu happened to walk out of the villa and caught Zhao Qibing's words. Both their expressions shifted almost imperceptibly, yet Wei Zhao, keen as he was, noticed at once.
Little Shu was usually the sort who delighted in chaos, yet today she was unusually quiet. She did not argue with Zhao Qibing, but stood silently behind Wei Zhao, waiting for his decision.
Yu Yi, too, feared that Zhao Qibing and his lot might return, and so had been pacing back and forth before Wei Zhao's gate—just in time to witness the whole headache-inducing scene. Before this, when the Dark Night Palace had come demanding pills from Wei Zhao, Yu Yi had thought nothing of it; but today he was stunned to discover that the black-clad elder and Zhao Qibing had joined forces.
Under the circumstances, Yu Yi dared not step forward rashly. Zhao Qibing's remark that even the Yu family would not dare meddle made him all the more hesitant. The Yu family had backing, yes, but they were, after all, a hidden-tier family; to set themselves against the ancient tier was simply not realistic.
"Hahahaha, Wei Zhao, what about it? Nothing left to say, is there? If you know what's good for you, hand over the Great Return Pill at once—otherwise, I start breaking things!" Zhao Qibing waved a hand and threatened Wei Zhao: "First I'll ruin Gu Mengyao's pretty face, then I'll break Shen Yushu's legs. Damn it, what I hate most is this Big-Breasted Shu. Once her legs are broken, I'll smash her chest to a pulp—swinging around in front of my eyes like that, sickening just to look at!"
Wei Zhao frowned. Against Zhao Qibing's vicious, vulgar words he was utterly helpless, and just as he was about to nod and give in, a voice—leisurely and cold—rang out from behind Zhao Qibing and the black-clad man: "Ancient sects running wild in the secular world—who gave you the gall to do such a thing?"
The black-clad elder was startled, and so was Wei Zhao—for neither had sensed when another person had appeared nearby. Even Yu Yi, hidden not far off, paled: he did not know when the newcomer had arrived, and not even he, a heaven-rank expert, had detected it.
But the next moment, Yu Yi relaxed, for the speaker had not concealed his strength—he was, astonishingly, an expert at the peak of the late heaven rank!
"You... who are you?" The black-clad elder's expression changed as well. Yu Yi could sense the newcomer's strength, and the black-clad elder was no exception. An expert at the peak of the late heaven rank—among the ancient sects, such a one would be a sect master, a supreme elder, a grand elder. Why would such a person suddenly appear here?
"A man who cannot abide injustice." It was an elegant young gentleman in white robes, a folding fan in his hand. For all his dashing air, his voice carried a keep-your-distance chill.
"I am the black-clad elder of the Dark Night Palace. By order of the Supreme Elder, I have come to recover the stolen goods taken by that junior Wei Zhao. I care not who you are, but I ask you not to interfere with the Dark Night Palace's lawful rights!" The black-clad elder's words were fierce but his heart faint—the other man was, after all, a top-tier expert of the cultivation world.
"Stolen goods? Since when is it stolen goods? I was not aware." The young man in white glanced at the black-clad elder and asked coldly.
"What do you know? This is an internal matter of the Dark Night Palace. Even if you are an expert at the peak of the late heaven rank, we are under no obligation to report to you!" the black-clad elder said, brazening it out.
"Other matters, I naturally would not concern myself with. But this matter touches the interests of my sect, and I, Tian Canbian, must intervene!" The young man in white snapped his fan shut, his gaze sweeping coldly toward the black-clad elder.
"Your sect? What are you... What! You say you are Tian Canbian?" The black-clad elder's face broke into sudden understanding, and he stared at the young man in white with utter horror. "You say you are... the young sect master of the Xuandan Sect?"
"Indeed. The reward pills for the Xuandan Sect trial were issued under the personal authority of our Xuandan Sect—how is it your Dark Night Palace's place to meddle?" The young man in white was, of course, Tian Die'er. She had rushed back overnight, and never expected to witness such a scene upon her return; at once she stepped forward to put a stop to it.
The black-clad elder stared at the young man in white, his eyes full of hesitation and resentment. He could not believe that Tian Canbian would personally concern herself with such a trifle—this was no great matter at all. In his heart he clung to a shred of hope, a doubt: could this be some ancient-tier underling of Wei Zhao's in disguise? But the strength was no counterfeit.
Still, the black-clad elder asked, "As far as I know, the young sect master Tian is overwhelmed with affairs—how would she have time for such a small matter? How do you prove your identity?"
"Is this not proof enough?" Tian Die'er casually tossed a token toward the black-clad elder.
The black-clad elder caught it and looked—and his gaze froze at once. This was indeed the token held only by sect masters, young sect masters, and elders of the ancient sects. The tokens had been forged by common agreement of the entire ancient tier, and the black-clad elder recognized it at once; he himself possessed one marked as an elder of the Dark Night Palace. It was meant to make things convenient for those of the ancient tier when abroad on business, lest the flood waters wash away the Dragon King's temple and kin fail to know kin.
So the black-clad elder had no further doubts. Reluctant as he was, he respectfully returned the token to Tian Die'er, cupped his fists, and said, "The black-clad elder of the Dark Night Palace pays his respects to the young sect master Tian! Since the young sect master Tian has taken a hand in this, I shall take my leave first."
With that, the black-clad elder made to depart with Zhao Qibing. Zhao Qibing, though he could not make sense of the situation, knew better than to provoke this handsome youth, and could only lower his head and follow the black-clad elder in a hasty retreat, not daring to utter another word about breaking Gu Mengyao's or Shen Yushu's legs.
