Chapter 2738 — Taking Her Away
"Wei Zhao? What are you doing here?" Kang Jinglong had not expected Wei Zhao to show up, and he was even more puzzled as to how Wei Zhao had found this place.
"Wang Xinyan is ill. Am I not allowed to come?" Wei Zhao glanced at Kang Jinglong, then walked toward the inner room of the ward.
"Wait, don't go in!" Kang Jinglong stood up and blocked Wei Zhao's path, trying to stop him from entering the inner room.
"What's wrong with you?" Wei Zhao shot him a look. "I'm here to see a classmate. Do I need your permission for that?"
"You..." Kang Jinglong had not expected Wei Zhao to be so forceful. He had only just told Wei Zhao about Kang Jingming today—why wasn't Wei Zhao afraid?
"Get out of the way." Wei Zhao seized Kang Jinglong by the collar, hauled him aside, and pushed the door open to enter Wang Xinyan's ward himself.
"You..." Kang Jinglong was furious. He turned to look at Xiao Ji and Xiao Ben, hoping they would say something, but to his surprise, both men's eyes shifted evasively. They did hate Wei Zhao, but they feared him even more. At this moment Wei Zhao did not even give Kang Jinglong the time of day—would stepping forward not be inviting humiliation?
Seeing Xiao Ji and Xiao Ben shrink back like turtles, Kang Jinglong had no recourse but to follow Wei Zhao into the ward—and there he saw Wei Zhao holding Wang Xinyan's hand. His eyes fairly blazed with fire. He rushed over in a few swift strides, slapped Wei Zhao's hand away, and roared, "Wei Zhao, don't push people too far! Wang Xinyan is my fiancée—the Xiao family has acknowledged it. What right do you have to interfere? I'm telling you, I am not to be trifled with. The Kang family is not what it used to be. My brother Kang Jingming is now the Eighth Elder of the Xuandan Sect, an ancient sect."
"Eighth Elder? I'll give you a slap!" Wei Zhao was in the middle of examining Wang Xinyan's condition when Kang Jinglong interrupted him. His anger flared at once, and he dealt Kang Jinglong a resounding slap across the face.
"You... you dare hit me?" Kang Jinglong stared at Wei Zhao in disbelief. "Aren't you afraid my brother will come to deal with you?"
"You want to compare ancient backgrounds with me? I don't mind telling you—my little wife is the future palace master of the Ice Palace. You have an ancient sect behind you—well, who doesn't? Stop waving that thing around all the time. If you've got the guts, go fetch him!" Wei Zhao said coldly.
His patience had its limits. Kang Jinglong was usually all bluster, and Wei Zhao had not wanted a direct confrontation with the Xuandan Sect, so he had let him be. But today Wang Xinyan had gone out for no apparent reason and then fainted—if Kang Jinglong had nothing to do with it, Wei Zhao would not believe it.
"Uh..." Kang Jinglong suddenly thought of Feng Xiaoxiao—that slip of a girl who had nearly landed him in trouble when they dined together last time. The corners of his mouth twitched. He knew about Feng Xiaoxiao too; he simply had not made the connection before.
And now, at last, he understood why Wei Zhao was unafraid. The man had found himself a fine wife. His own brother was an elder, true—but Wei Zhao's wife was a vice palace master, the future palace master. With backing like that, Wei Zhao was not the least bit his inferior.
"Why did Xinyan faint? Was it because of you?" Wei Zhao frowned. Wang Xinyan's physical condition was actually a little better than when he had examined her yesterday—especially since she had just taken the potion. She was still very weak now, but weakness should not be what triggered the fainting. It had to be something else.
"I..." Kang Jinglong had not expected Wei Zhao to be so sharp, to see at a glance the cause of Wang Xinyan's fainting. In truth he had misread the situation—Wei Zhao was only guessing—but with a guilty conscience, Kang Jinglong immediately assumed Wei Zhao had already ascertained the truth.
"So it really was you?" Seeing Kang Jinglong's reaction, Wei Zhao grew all the more certain, and his expression darkened.
"I... I didn't do anything! I just saw Wang Xinyan with you, so I went to the Xiao family. Is that wrong? She was my fiancée to begin with, I..." Kang Jinglong was growing a little afraid. After his attempt to intimidate Wei Zhao with Kang Jingming's background had failed, he had begun to lose his nerve.
"Smack!" Wei Zhao slapped him outright, sending Kang Jinglong sprawling to the floor. "Oh, I didn't like the look of you, so I knocked you out. Was that wrong of me?"
Kang Jinglong did not hear Wei Zhao's last sentence. Had he heard it, he probably would have fainted again from sheer rage.
Wei Zhao scooped Wang Xinyan up in his arms and walked out of the ward. There was nothing wrong with her body now, and there was no point in leaving her in the hospital, so he might as well take her home.
Kang Jinglong had been knocked unconscious, and under the aghast gazes of Xiao Ji, Xiao Ben, and Xiao Qinlin, Wei Zhao carried Wang Xinyan out of the ward.
Xiao Ji and Xiao Ben pursed their lips, wanting to say something but not daring to, and could only watch Wei Zhao leave—furious but silent. As for Xiao Qinlin, she merely gave a faint sigh, wondering whether she had done something wrong.
Should she not have forced her daughter to marry Kang Jinglong? But if Xinyan did not marry Kang Jinglong, what would become of the Xiao family? What would become of the pharmaceutical company she and her husband ran? One arm cannot twist a thigh—Kang Jinglong's backing was not to be underestimated.
But now it seemed Wei Zhao was not afraid of Kang Jinglong at all? Even after Kang Jinglong revealed his background, Wei Zhao had dared to knock him out. Was Wei Zhao being rash, or did he have confidence? Xiao Qinlin could no longer be sure of the pros and cons.
It seemed Wang Xinyan liked being with Wei Zhao. As Wang Xinyan's mother, Xiao Qinlin naturally wanted her daughter's happiness, and so at this moment her heart began to lean toward Wei Zhao—though she did not know whether Wei Zhao was a match for the Kang family.
So Xiao Qinlin did not stop them. She let Wei Zhao and her daughter go. Kang Jinglong had already been knocked out, and his fiancée had been carried off by another man—he had no one to blame but himself.
Wei Zhao brought Wang Xinyan back to the villa. Since she had fainted and had not yet woken, he could not very well hold her while cultivating, so he had Gu Mengyao and Shen Yushu help change her into pajamas and put her to bed upstairs.
The night passed without incident. Early the next morning, as Wei Zhao was preparing breakfast, he was surprised to see Gu Mengyao, Shen Yushu, and Wang Xinyan come downstairs together. Wang Xinyan had not slept in? Wei Zhao was taken aback—he had grown used to Wang Xinyan sleeping straight through until noon these past few days, so seeing her up in the morning was quite a shock.
"Xinyan, you're up?" Wei Zhao looked at her and asked.
"Mm..." Wang Xinyan nodded shyly. "But I'm still a bit sleepy and haven't much energy—but I'm up..."
"That's good..." Wei Zhao nodded and said nothing more aloud, but inwardly he was suspicious. Even if Wang Xinyan were recovering, she could not possibly recover this fast.
