Chapter 2670 — No One Found
"Never mind. I was only asking casually." Wei Zhao shook his head and stopped worrying at the subject.
Gu Mengyao and Shen Yushu breathed a sigh of relief, afraid that Wei Zhao might have begun to suspect something.
Still, the incidents of late had left them increasingly uneasy. They did not know whether Wei Zhao would come into contact with more of Tang Zhi's belongings and affairs—and if so, what would they do then?
They had no news of Tang Zhi either. Gu Mengyao and Shen Yushu missed her dearly, yet they knew Tang Zhi could not easily call them, and they could never find the time to visit her in Snow Valley—nor could they possibly explain any of it to Wei Zhao.
The two of them went upstairs, both of them anxious.
"Xiaoshu, your idea isn't working so well either. Didn't you say that if we found Wei Zhao a first wife, he'd stop thinking about Tang Zhi? Well, we've found him one, and he's still thinking about her!" Gu Mengyao said helplessly. "If I'd known he'd still pine for her after we found one, I wouldn't have bothered."
"Ah... oh... um... well, that's obviously because Sister Xinyan hasn't agreed to be the first wife yet! Once she agrees, everything will be fine..." Shen Yushu said. "Yaoyao, are you jealous? Do you regret it—wish you'd taken the position yourself while you had the chance?"
"Ahem... what has that got to do with me? I've never had anything against Wang Xinyan." Gu Mengyao shook her head. "I was just talking off the top of my head. Wang Xinyan can help Wei Zhao; there's no way we could let an outsider have that advantage."
"True enough—but your place as first wife is about to be snatched away!" Shen Yushu said.
"What first wife? Leave me out of it. First tell me what we're going to do about Tang Zhi." Gu Mengyao ignored Shen Yushu's question.
"Yaoyao, a guilty conscience needs no accuser." Shen Yushu pouted. Seeing that Gu Mengyao did not want to discuss it, she could only say, "How about we ask Sister Tang Zhi and see what she thinks?"
"And how do we ask her?" Gu Mengyao countered.
"Why not send Kang Xiaofeng and Xiaofen to Snow Valley? We can't go, but they can!" Shen Yushu suggested.
"That could work. It'll give them a chance to see how Tang Zhi is doing—I've been worried about her too..." That was simply Gu Mengyao's nature: she and Tang Zhi had once quarreled bitterly, but now that their relationship had improved, she fretted over her a great deal.
"All right, then I'll call Kang Xiaofeng..." Shen Yushu picked up the phone, and the matter was settled just like that.
Kang Xiaofeng had not expected Shen Yushu to ask him to visit Tang Zhi, and it came as something of a pleasant surprise. Xiaofen and Liu Xinlan had mentioned wanting to visit Tang Zhi when they came to the company earlier, but Kang Xiaofeng had not known how to explain it to Wei Zhao. After all, he was now a vice president of the pharmaceutical company—he could hardly quit and go on vacation for no reason.
Even for a vacation, he would have to clear it with Wei Zhao. Besides, he had just gone on vacation with Xiaofen during the summer holidays; taking another so soon hardly seemed realistic. So Xiaofen and Liu Xinlan's suggestion had been shelved for the time being.
Now Shen Yushu was actually asking him to visit Tang Zhi and saying she could smooth things over with Wei Zhao. Kang Xiaofeng was naturally delighted and agreed at once.
The excuse Shen Yushu gave Wei Zhao was simple enough: didn't she often suffer flare-ups of her "high fever disease"? She needed a certain medicinal herb now, and it had to be bought in person from an herb merchant—a merchant introduced through Wang Xinyan's father, utterly reliable. This merchant also wholesaled many other herbs, so they would send Kang Xiaofeng, the company's vice president, to have a look and buy the herb Xiaoshu needed; and if the other herbs were cheap, he might as well purchase some of those too.
Wei Zhao found it odd that Shen Yushu knew her illness required that particular herb, but Shen Yushu was always doing strange, unexpected things, so he was not surprised. Since she did not explain, he did not press her; in any case, the merchant came recommended by Wang Xinyan's father, so there should be no problem.
This matter drew Wang Xinyan in as well, but once she understood the situation, she was glad to help. What left her conflicted was Gu Mengyao's wish for her to become the first wife in Tang Zhi's place—she truly could not do that. Tang Zhi was barred from acknowledging Wei Zhao because of the bonds of the ancient sect, and was not Wang Xinyan in the same position?
Owing to Kang Jingming's standing in the Xuandan Sect, she truly had no way to be openly with Wei Zhao; that too would only harm him. So Wang Xinyan was torn—should she confess to Gu Mengyao and reveal her own difficulties?
Be that as it may, Kang Xiaofeng duly set off for Snow Valley with Xiaofen and Liu Xinlan. He went bearing Shen Yushu's task and a great many questions to ask in private; but the happiest of all were Xiaofen and Liu Xinlan. Both had been Tang Zhi's close friends since childhood, and now that Tang Zhi had gone, they missed her terribly. The chance to visit her filled them with excitement.
Early one morning, a detective from overseas arrived at the Songshan City Police Bureau. Tang Yuqi was famous abroad, and some in the bureau knew his name, having seen on television the cases he had solved; they held the man in considerable admiration. So when he suddenly turned up at the Songshan City Police Bureau, everyone was puzzled, assuming he must be investigating some case.
But when Tang Yuqi explained the purpose of his visit, everyone was astonished. They had never imagined that the famous detective Tang Yuqi's hometown was Songshan City, or that the reason for his visit was to find his uncle!
"Tang Jucheng—that name does sound familiar. Hmm... now I remember. Captain Song handled a case involving his family once!" The speaker was the new head of criminal investigation at the Songshan City Police Bureau, a man surnamed Zhang who had formerly served under Qiu Lingshan.
"Oh? His family was involved in a case?" Tang Yuqi's expression changed, and he asked anxiously, "What happened?"
Tang Yuqi was a detective; naturally he knew that any case serious enough for the criminal investigation unit to handle could not be a small one. So he grew tense—surely nothing terrible had happened?
"Ha ha, don't be alarmed. It was nothing major—just that Tang Jucheng's daughter was injured in a violent demolition case. A piece of falling tile from the house struck her head, but she's fine now." Captain Zhang explained.
