Chapter 2473 — Scared to Death
Even so, Kang Jinglong could not resist a sour remark. "Wei Zhao, you don't seem so bold after all. One little skull and it scared you too!"
"Oh, the skull didn't scare me. Your bloodcurdling scream did," Wei Zhao said mildly. "Haven't you heard the saying that man is the deadliest fright to man?"
With that, Wei Zhao scooped up the black cat from the ground, finding it rather amusing. He had no idea when the skull had been fitted over the cat's head, but the upper half had practically grown fast to it—clearly the cat had been wearing that skull since it was a kitten!
Which meant the unclean thing these tourists had seen here was very likely this black cat! After all, that ghastly entity surpassing the Heaven tier had no leisure to go frightening tourists; it could barely keep up with its own cultivation.
Most likely it only emerged to scare people off when someone strayed onto its territory. On any other route, there was theoretically no ghost to be seen—what people saw was probably just this black cat.
"…" Kang Jinglong had not expected his jab at Wei Zhao to be turned back on him. He was instantly annoyed, yet utterly unable to retort.
The group walked back to the expedition vehicle and found its door already shut, so Wei Zhao stepped up and knocked on it.
"Who's there? Who is it—" The expedition driver was alone in the vehicle, terrified, not daring to look into the distance. He had clearly seen Wei Zhao and the others go only a short way off, yet in an instant they had vanished—small wonder his heart was in his throat!
And the car was out of fuel and could not move. All he could do was huddle inside and wait for dawn, not daring to let his eyes wander, lest he glimpse something unclean. As for whether Wei Zhao and the others lived or died, he did not much care.
If they died, they died. When the time came, he need only claim that Wei Zhao and the rest had ignored all warnings and insisted on leaving the vehicle of their own accord; the resort would not bear much responsibility.
Drowsy, the driver was on the verge of dozing off when he suddenly heard knocking on the door. His scalp prickled and his heart pounded with fright! Could it be a ghost knocking?
Wei Zhao seethed at the driver's words. This business had plainly been arranged by that fool Su Lengzi to torment people. Had he not happened to be an alchemist and struck a bargain with the ghastly thing, his whole group would likely have met their end here today!
Kang Jinglong had not known the place was dangerous; his urging everyone out of the vehicle was forgivable. After all, he had thought the deserted village was merely a tourist spot. Had he known how terrifying it was, he likely would not have dared come down himself.
But this driver had treated human life like grass. Wang Xinyan had nearly come to harm—so how could Wei Zhao let the man off easily?
At the thought, Wei Zhao lifted the black cat in his hand and pressed it against the driver's-side window!
Though the driver was frightened beyond measure, he could only swallow his terror, raise his head, and look.
But the moment he looked up, his pupils dilated and his mouth fell wide open! He saw a skull right outside his window! And within that skull, a pair of eyes glinting green were staring straight at him!
"Mother of god@!#@#¥#%… a ghost!" The driver let out a shriek of pure terror and slumped over the steering wheel, motionless.
Wei Zhao casually released the black cat, then, under the astonished gazes of the others, applied a little force and opened the door, climbing aboard.
"Wei Zhao, why did you scare him like that? If you frighten him to death, who's going to drive?" Kang Jinglong frowned, failing to understand the move.
"This car has no fuel at all. Even alive, he can't drive it," Wei Zhao said flatly.
"What? No fuel?" Kang Jinglong blinked. "Didn't you say it was broken?"
"That was a lie, to fool you." Wei Zhao curled his lip and recounted how the driver had phoned Su Lengzi, then gave a cold snort. "And isn't this mess one you two brought on yourselves?"
"This…" Kang Jinglong looked awkward, but he still argued stubbornly, "If I hadn't stepped in back then, someone was harassing Wang Xinyan—would you have stayed out of it? How can this be blamed on me?"
"If I'd stepped in, that Su Lengzi would have become a simpleton. He wouldn't have gotten the chance!" Wei Zhao shot You Panhu a cool glance. "You Panhu knows this well enough, I think. His family has a blue-haired fellow whose brain I blew apart with true qi."
You Panhu shuddered for no apparent reason and forced a smile. "Come now, Wei Zhao, what's done is done. Brother Kang meant well. He isn't as formidable as you—isn't it good enough that he managed this much?"
Kang Jinglong, also somewhat embarrassed, turned to inspect the car and see whether it truly had no fuel. But when he looked at the driver, he suddenly realized the man had no heartbeat left. "Wei Zhao—this man was scared to death!"
"Oh. Dead is dead," Wei Zhao said indifferently.
Before Kang Jinglong and You Panhu, Wei Zhao felt no need to conceal anything. Too many people connected to the Kang and You families had been crippled or killed by him already; there was no point in hiding it, and no other classmates were present anyway.
Wang Xinyan and Han Jingyi were people Wei Zhao trusted as well, and he was not afraid they would spread word.
Kang Jinglong's mouth twitched. Indeed, this driver's death was no great loss—he had brought it on himself. In fact, Kang Jinglong felt rather pleased, as if a knot of stifled anger had loosened! He had been holding in a bellyful of resentment, and later, upon learning the driver had played him for a fool, he had grown even more miserable.
Now Wei Zhao had vented his spleen for him, which amounted to venting his own.
"So now… what do we do? We can't just stay here forever, can we?" Kang Jinglong had lost all interest. He had thought Wei Zhao was afraid of ghosts, only to find Wei Zhao was not afraid in the least—and he himself had made a fool of himself instead. Naturally, he no longer wished to linger.
Yet before Wei Zhao could speak, his phone rang!
Wei Zhao took it out, glanced at the caller ID, and answered at once. "Hello, Teacher Bai!"
