Chapter 1058 — Old Yu Gets Duped

The Blossom Guardian

If Wei Zhao had still been only a formidable fighter at the late Yellow rank back then, he would have stood no chance against Wu Gonggao! The fact that Wei Zhao had dared to make such a move was proof enough of just how much he cared for her! Feng Xiaoxiao's heart swelled with emotion; heedless of the fact that they were right at the school gate, she threw her arms around Wei Zhao and sobbed aloud.

Her sudden tears gave Wei Zhao a terrible fright. What on earth was going on? She had been perfectly fine a moment ago — how had she burst into tears in the space of a breath? Had the wailing spirit of that blubbering fatso Lai taken possession of Feng Xiaoxiao?

"Xiaoxiao, what's wrong?" Wei Zhao was a little frightened, and more than a little embarrassed. After all, they were at the school gate, and a young girl was clinging to him and crying. Those in the know might not think anything of it — Feng Xiaoxiao was, more or less, his girlfriend — but what about those who weren't?

"Woo... Wei Zhao, my dear, you're so good to me!" Feng Xiaoxiao said between sobs, overcome with emotion.

"Huh?" Wei Zhao was struck dumb on the spot. How exactly had he been so good to her?

"In Yanjing, at the auction house — you knew perfectly well how formidable that old bastard Wu Gonggao was, and still you stood in front of me!" Seeing his bewilderment, Feng Xiaoxiao explained.

"Er..." Hearing her words, Wei Zhao was caught between laughter and tears. "That business you're talking about..."

"Woo... I'm so touched. Never, not once in my whole life, has anyone been this good to me!" Feng Xiaoxiao meant every word. Because of his work, Feng Tianlong could never be at her side, and so Wei Zhao counted as the person who had treated her best.

"Then stop crying... We're at the school gate, and it doesn't look good if people see us..." Wei Zhao did not much care what others thought, but this was, after all, a rather awkward affair, so he spoke up to remind her.

"I don't care — I want to hold you and cry, so just let me be moved for a while!" Feng Xiaoxiao had begun to wheedle and play the spoiled child.

Wei Zhao had no choice but to let her hold him. But Feng Xiaoxiao stayed moved for a very long time, and at last Wei Zhao could not help himself. "All right, Xiaoxiao, shall we head back to school?"

"No! I want to keep holding you!" Feng Xiaoxiao was enamored of the feeling of leaning in Wei Zhao's arms and had no wish to lose it.

"If you don't behave, I won't be good to you anymore." Helpless, Wei Zhao had no choice but to frighten her.

"Oh... all right..." The trick worked; only then did Feng Xiaoxiao reluctantly let go of Wei Zhao. In truth, the tears on her face had dried long ago — she had simply wanted to linger in his embrace.

Feng Xiaoxiao and Wei Zhao returned to the classroom, and the whole way passed without incident. The young mistress and Shen Yushu knew of the relationship between Wei Zhao and Feng Xiaoxiao, and so they turned a blind eye to the pair. Xie Yufeng, however, shot them a venomous look as they came in.

It was because of Feng Xiaoxiao and Wei Zhao that he had lost five million yuan! Xie Yufeng was determined to settle that score.

Yunhai Shuku was the owner of a small general store, scraping by on a modest trade. His family's circumstances were straitened; with little capital to hand, he had never been able to expand the business, and the money he earned each day was just enough to keep the family fed.

Still, Yunhai Shuku was not content to let his family stay poor forever. He had given some thought to changing his lot, and so on the occasional day when business was good, he would buy a few lottery tickets for a bit of fun, dreaming that one day he might win the five-million-yuan jackpot and set his family up for good.

"Old Yu, what are you brooding about?" Toward the end of the day, in the market, the owner of the butcher's stall next door came over and asked.

"Nothing much. Getting ready to pack up and head home..." Yunhai Shuku said as he sorted through his wares.

"You free tonight? I'll take you to see something exciting!" the butcher said.

"Oh? What kind of exciting thing?" Yunhai Shuku was taken aback, unsure what the butcher meant. Then he shook his head. "One of those porn shows, is it? I'm not going. My wife's a terror — if she found out, I'd be done for!"

"Ha, I always said you were a coward, and I was right!" The butcher shook his head in disdain. "Porn show? It's a boxing match! Underground bare-knuckle fighting — know what that is? Plenty exciting!"

"A boxing match?" Hearing that it was not, in fact, a porn show, Yunhai Shuku did not rush to refuse. "Is the ticket very expensive?"

"No charge!" The butcher gave a sly grin. "A brother of mine from the streets — my cousin's boy, that is — he got his hands on a few tickets and passed a couple to me. Come on, you and me, let's go see what all the fuss is about!"

With that, the butcher draped his greasy paw over Yunhai Shuku's shoulder and, all warmth and familiarity, began tugging him along.

In truth the butcher had come to take advantage of Yunhai Shuku; the man's heart was rotten through and through. He had pocketed five hundred yuan from his nephew for one purpose only: to sweet-talk Yunhai Shuku into going to watch the underground boxing match. Otherwise, a treat like this would never have put him in mind of Yunhai Shuku at all.

"No charge? A good thing like that just falls into my lap?" Yunhai Shuku was skeptical. "And even if it were free, you'd think of me?"

Yunhai Shuku was no fool. His dealings with the butcher were nothing more than casual acquaintance, and here the man had passed over everyone else to single him out. That struck Yunhai Shuku as odd.

"Ha! Didn't you mind my stall for me half a day just the other day? Sold a bit of meat for me too. So when a bit of good fortune comes my way, naturally the first person I think of is Brother Yunhai Shuku!" the butcher said with a laugh.

"Is that so!" Hearing him put it that way, Yunhai Shuku half believed him, though he still asked, a little uneasy, "You're sure it's free? I haven't a cent on me — my daughter Yu Yuanyuan took all my money home!"

"No money needed!" the butcher said, grinning. "Come on, you just have to show up!"

Only then did Yunhai Shuku set his mind at ease, and he went off with the butcher to watch the match.

Yunhai Shuku had still been uneasy at first, but once he and the butcher had entered the venue and taken their seats in the stands, he truly understood: not a single cent had been spent, and here he was, inside watching the fight.

With nothing left to worry about, Yunhai Shuku naturally fell to chatting with the butcher. "This boxing match — who's organizing it? Is it any good?"

"Ha! This is underground boxing — of course it's good! It's real man-to-man combat!" The butcher chuckled. "Those are fights to the death! Word is they absolutely won't stop until one of them is dead!"
