Chapter 979 — My Dad Wants to See You Again
"He's not going to come after me too, is he?" Wei Zhao had not forgotten that Feng Tianlong wanted to see him. He had never doubted that Feng Xiaoxiao was lying—after all, he knew Feng Tianlong personally. As far as Wei Zhao could see, now that Feng Tianlong had learned of the relationship between him and his daughter, the man would surely summon him for a talk, especially since they had known each other before.
But the last time he spoke with Feng Xiaoxiao, she had said that Feng Tianlong had business to attend to, so Wei Zhao had not waited around. He knew the nature of Feng Tianlong's work well enough—one departure could mean a day, or ten days, half a month, even a year or more. How could Wei Zhao find the time to keep waiting? Besides, the young lady here had gotten herself into trouble.
"Yes, he wants to see you again!" Feng Xiaoxiao nodded, but when she saw that Wei Zhao seemed utterly unfazed, she found it rather strange. "Hey, why aren't you scared at all? My dad knows about us!"
"Oh." Wei Zhao answered mildly. "What is there about us?"
"Well, I showed him the photos anyway. What do you think he takes us for?" Feng Xiaoxiao shot back—a question in earnest.
"Heh..." Wei Zhao merely smiled and said nothing more. He was sure Feng Tianlong knew his daughter's character well enough; a few words of explanation from Wei Zhao would clear things up. After all, he and Feng Tianlong had worked together, and the man knew what kind of person he was. If anything really had happened between him and Feng Xiaoxiao, he would not have denied it.
"Can't you at least be a little nervous?" Feng Xiaoxiao was struck by a sudden sense of defeat. Other people's boyfriends were always jittery the first time they met their girlfriend's parents, yet Wei Zhao did not treat this as anything at all—which clearly meant he did not treat her as anything at all either! Feng Xiaoxiao felt thoroughly glum.
She waved her fist. Romance was not yet won; she must still strive! She refused to believe that with her looks, Wei Zhao would never take the bait. Hmph—no matter how cunning the fox, it cannot escape a hunter who hounds it twenty-four hours a day!
"When shall we meet?" Wei Zhao asked.
"I don't know. If you agree, I'll call my dad, and he'll get in touch with you," Feng Xiaoxiao said.
"All right, then have him set a time. I'll call on him at his door," Wei Zhao said with a nod.
Feng Xiaoxiao's return caused no great stir. It was senior year, and people came and went in the class all the time—that was perfectly normal. Some boarding students went back to their original schools, some repeat students arrived to study here, some students with no hope for the college entrance exam had already struck out on their own, and some pampered rich kids who never had to worry about their futures still skipped class every day and drifted along in style. Zou Ruoming was one of them.
After Wei Zhao and Feng Xiaoxiao returned to school, he parted ways with her to go find Tang Zhi. Feng Xiaoxiao had wanted to talk with Wei Zhao a while longer, and could not help feeling a little sulky. She sat in the classroom, idly flipping through a book, and she did not even know whether she could hold out until college. So Feng Xiaoxiao had little interest in studying either—and even if she failed to get into a university, with her father Feng Tianlong's connections, getting her enrolled somewhere would be no problem at all.
"Xiaoxiao, you're back? Where did you disappear to for a while?" Zhong Yongliang, seeing that Feng Xiaoxiao had returned, sat down beside her—in Wei Zhao's seat.
"Oh, I took a trip..." Feng Xiaoxiao glanced at Zhong Yongliang. "By the way, while I was away, did you all do anything to Wei Zhao?"
"Do anything to Wei Zhao..." Zhong Yongliang's expression changed at once, and then he said, "Xiaoxiao, actually, the reason I came over is to persuade you to give it up. Let's stop going after Wei Zhao..."
The matter of the Yu family—one dead—and the Xiao family—one reduced to idiocy—had thoroughly jolted Zhong Yongliang's nerves. Until he had enough strength, he would absolutely not entertain any ideas about Wei Zhao again. And as for Feng Xiaoxiao, who had once stood on the same battle line as him, he naturally did not want her provoking Wei Zhao anymore either.
If Feng Xiaoxiao provoked Wei Zhao and Wei Zhao lumped him, Zhong Yongliang, together with Feng Xiaoxiao as one bunch, then he would be in real trouble. So to avoid being dragged in, he had decided to give Feng Xiaoxiao a good talking-to and make her drop any designs on Wei Zhao.
In any case, Zhong Yongliang also felt that with Feng Xiaoxiao's abilities, there was simply no way she could do anything to Wei Zhao.
"Oh?" Feng Xiaoxiao was taken aback. "What's going on? Weren't you grinding your teeth with hatred for him before?"
"Ah, don't even mention it!" Zhong Yongliang shook his head. "Xiaoxiao, I'm telling you this only because we've always gotten along well! Did you know? The Yu family and the Xiao family in Yanjing both went after Wei Zhao... Those two are old established clans—have you heard of them?"
"The Yu family? The Xiao family?" How could Feng Xiaoxiao not have heard of them? She had attended the Yu family's auction not long ago, and afterward she had even sat at the same table as Wei Zhao and the Xiao family's younger generation. Naturally she knew these two great clans. "They went after Wei Zhao?"
"That's right. Those were Mystic-rank experts of the established families, and they went after Wei Zhao. Guess how it turned out?" As Zhong Yongliang said this, he felt rather glum. The gap between his own strength and Wei Zhao's was far too great. It was lucky he had never pushed Wei Zhao too far before—otherwise he might not live to see the day Zhang Naipao came down from the mountain.
"How did it turn out?" For no reason at all, Feng Xiaoxiao's heart tightened, and that startled her slightly. Why would she be nervous about Wei Zhao? Wasn't getting revenge on him what she wanted most? Now two great powers had helped her take revenge on Wei Zhao—so why was she not happy?
No—the one Wei Zhao had offended was her. If there was to be revenge, it had to be her own revenge, and no one else's! Feng Xiaoxiao gave herself a reason!
"The Yu family lost one of their own, and the Xiao family's man has been left a vegetable..." Zhong Yongliang sighed. "Little Sister Xiaoxiao, we're no match for him, so let's not act rashly!"
"What? Wei Zhao beat a member of the Yu family to death and turned one of the Xiao family into an idiot? And he walked away without a scratch?" Feng Xiaoxiao's eyes went wide as she stared at Zhong Yongliang in disbelief.
Feng Tianlong knew all of this but had not told Feng Xiaoxiao. In his view, Wei Zhao was a man of real strength, and those great clans had indeed grown rather reckless in recent years. Yes, they moved beyond the rules of the mundane world, but that was no license to go too far. Now someone was giving them a good knocking, and he reckoned that some among the higher-ups would be glad to see it—more than glad, in fact.
