Chapter 907 — And Me? What About Me?

The Blossom Guardian

Gu Mengyao was startled half out of her wits when Shen Yushu burst in so abruptly that she nearly leaped up from her chair. True, these matters could never have been kept from Xiaoshu—but Gu Mengyao was wound tight with nerves right now, and being barged in on like that still frightened her badly.

Gu Pengzhan, too, was torn between laughter and exasperation. He had never expected that, for all his efforts to keep Xiaoshu out of it, she would still end up hearing everything.

"Ha ha, how could we forget you?" Gu Pengzhan said, smiling at his daughter's best friend. He knew Shen Yushu's temperament well enough—scatterbrained and flighty from morning to night—and yet she and his daughter were thick as thieves. Given the chance, he supposed, the two of them would be sisters for life.

"I'm the little wife, aren't I, Yao-yao-jie? You promised me—are you going back on your word now?" From the look of it, Shen Yushu had heard every word that had passed between Gu Pengzhan and Gu Mengyao.

"When did I ever go back on my word?" Gu Mengyao said, half laughing, half weeping. "Buy one, get one free—I imagine that thing Wei Zhao will be delighted?"

Gu Pengzhan studied his daughter and, finding no sign of reluctance in her expression, breathed a quiet sigh of relief. "Xiaoshu, if you want to marry him, and Yao-yao has no objection, then of course I have none either. But as for the Chen family—that you'll have to go and explain yourself."

Gu Pengzhan was not a stubborn man. Ordinary merchant though he was, certain circumstances had brought him into contact with a few hidden families and sects—even with beings of a higher order still—and so he felt no great opposition to his daughter and Xiaoshu both marrying Wei Zhao. So long as his daughter was happy, that was enough. As for Shen Yushu's Chen family, Shen Yushu would have to persuade them herself; there was nothing he could do to help.

"Oh? Really?" Shen Yushu was taken aback, and she gave Gu Pengzhan a rather peculiar look.

She habitually spoke in a manner half true and half false, and this time was no different—she had put it to Gu Pengzhan half in jest, hoping to sound out his attitude. She had not expected him to be so composed, asking only for Gu Mengyao's opinion.

Gu Pengzhan smiled and said nothing more. He rose and walked out of the room, thinking to himself that to part those two for the rest of their lives was likely impossible now—it was rare enough to find two people who got on so well. But Wei Zhao—that was still a problem...

Wei Zhao had a girlfriend at school. What exactly was his own position in all this? Gu Pengzhan found it hard to gauge...

It seemed his daughter had been a step too slow. Wei Zhao had been in Songshan City barely more than a month, and already he had built up his own network of connections—even Liu Tianyi obeyed his every word. His father had been right: Wei Zhao was indeed a man of talent, with a future beyond measure...

……………………

Zhen Dazhou stared in disbelief at his son, now made a eunuch, and at Ma Zhu, half his arm blown away. How was this possible? Was Ma Zhu not a formidable hand at the peak of the mid Mystic rank, with eight layers of the Golden Bell Shield? How had he been beaten into such a state?

Was Wei Zhao not merely at the peak of the early Mystic rank? The gap between the two was enormous—and Ma Zhu had his divine art shielding his body. How could he possibly have lost?

"Medicine King, how is he? Is there any hope of curing my son?" Zhen Dazhou was filled with regret. If only he had not set his mind on dealing with Wei Zhao back then—if he had simply taken the money and let Gu Mengyao and Shen Yushu go—none of this would have happened!

He could not accept it. And so, beneath his regret lay a deep and bitter hatred. Wei Zhao—if I, Zhen Dazhou, do not see you dead, then I am not fit to walk this earth!

"None..." The Medicine King shook his head. "They may call me the Medicine King, but that only means my medical skill is exceptional. Your son's testicles were blown apart by a bullet. Unless I had the power to make withered trees bloom and dead trees bear fruit, such a thing could never be made to grow again!"

"Dad, I don't want to be a eunuch! I haven't had my fun yet—boo hoo..." Zhen Yingjun burst into loud weeping, hatred for Wei Zhao burning in his heart. Before, Wei Zhao had turned him into a eunuch, yes—but only a false one. Now he had become a true eunuch!

Though it was Shen Yushu who had caused all this, it was Wei Zhao whom Zhen Yingjun hated! If Wei Zhao had not wounded Ma Zhu, Shen Yushu would never have found her opening! So in the end, all of this came down to Wei Zhao! He wanted Wei Zhao dead—dead beyond any hope of death!

"Don't worry, son, I'll cure you even if it costs me every last penny!" Zhen Dazhou said through gritted teeth. He had made a great deal of money, but what use was money when his line was cut off?

When Zhao Qibing heard that Zhen Dazhou meant to spend his entire fortune curing Zhen Yingjun, his eyes lit up at once. He knew full well that Zhen Dazhou had just squeezed two hundred and fifty million out of Gu Pengzhan, and he coveted it dearly! If that two hundred and fifty million came into his hands, the losses from the collapse of the tower would be nothing at all—and building a grand new Qibing Tower would no longer be a dream!

At this thought, Zhao Qibing said to the Medicine King, "Medicine King, can't you think of something? See if there's any way to cure Zhen Yingjun?"

"This... let me think it over, look through my references, and see if there's any good approach?" The Medicine King knew that Zhao Qibing was loath to give up such a lucrative opportunity, but for the moment he could not come up with any good way to treat Zhen Yingjun.

Granted, the Medicine King's whole purpose was to swindle people—but swindling, too, took skill; one did not simply cheat at random. It was true that the more he treated a patient, the sicker the patient became, but the prerequisite was that he first cure one illness and then conjure up another. As for Zhen Yingjun's present condition, he found himself somewhat at a loss.

Still, for the sake of earning a little more money for Young Master Bing, the Medicine King felt he ought to think it over carefully and see whether he could come up with some countermeasure.

"Good, then I'll have to trouble the Medicine King!" How could Zhen Dazhou know that Zhao Qibing and the Medicine King meant to keep fleecing him? He took it for the friendship that had grown between them through their dealings of late, which obliged the Medicine King to put in the effort.

"Think nothing of it, think nothing of it..." The Medicine King nodded.

"By the way, Ma-ye, what does the boss say?" Zhen Dazhou turned to look at Ma Zhu, who was in a sorry state at the moment, his whole body wrapped in bandages.

"The boss's side is no trouble—my master will send fellow disciples over as well..." Here Ma Zhu trailed off, a note of sorrow in his voice. He was the youngest and most promising disciple of his school, having cultivated the Golden Bell Cover to the eighth layer at such a young age; he was already an outer-school expert at the peak of the middle Xuan rank, the hope of the entire school!

His master had placed him at the boss's side, first to temper him, and second to protect the boss—after all, the boss brought the school a great deal of profit every year... Originally, his master had said that once his Golden Bell Cover broke through to the ninth layer, he could return to the school and move through the jianghu as its young sect master. But all that splendid future had shattered in this one moment...
