Chapter 885 — A Sudden Turn of Events

The Blossom Guardian

No sooner had he spoken than Zhen Yingjun made a gesture, and the warning signal from the jade pendant on Wei Zhao's chest abruptly spiked into a frantic pulse!

Danger at this position — Wei Zhao's instincts flung him sideways, and a bullet grazed past him! A silenced handgun!

The shot startled Wei Zhao. He had not expected Zhen Yingjun to use a pistol against him; he had assumed Zhen Yingjun would rely on that skilled hand to finish him off!

Still, a few paltry bullets could hardly do Wei Zhao any harm! Now that he was on his guard, there was no chance he would let himself be hit.

One bullet missed, and then — pop, pop, pop — the muffled reports came in an unbroken chain, like dried beans bursting from a bamboo tube, as countless rounds came flying toward Wei Zhao!

So many of them? Wei Zhao had never imagined Zhen Yingjun would have this many men lying in ambush with guns, waiting for him! This was a formidable opponent indeed!

Arrogant and overbearing as Zhen Yingjun might appear, he was nothing like Zhong Yongliang or Zhao Qibing — he actually understood the tactic of saturating a target with gunfire! Had Wei Zhao not broken through to the Profound rank and remained at the late Yellow rank, it would have been utterly impossible for him to dodge such a hail of bullets!

But Wei Zhao had already advanced to the Profound rank, and with the nimble agility and peculiar footwork he had honed as an assassin, he narrowly evaded the first round of fire!

"Keep shooting! Shoot, shoot, shoot! Shoot him dead!" Zhen Yingjun, seeing that Wei Zhao had miraculously survived the first volley, was instantly beside himself with fury. "You pack of good-for-nothings — this many guns and you can't kill one man?"

Zhen Yingjun was still a good distance from Wei Zhao, and he was not worried that Wei Zhao might charge him, so he spoke with complete recklessness. After all, even if Wei Zhao did charge, he had Ma Zhu, that skilled hand, at his side!

Pop! Pop! Pop!

The muffled gunshots rang out again — but this time, something unexpected happened...

"Awooo—" Along with the dull crack of the gunfire came a sudden, bloodcurdling scream. A gunman hidden in ambush flew out whole from behind the boulder where he had been concealed, crashed to the ground, twitched twice, a thread of blood trickling from the corner of his mouth, and lay still...

This sudden turn of events left everyone present dumbstruck! Zhen Yingjun was dumbstruck, Ma Zhu was dumbstruck, the two black-clad bodyguards were dumbstruck — and the hidden gunmen were dumbstruck as well!

How could they ever have imagined that a comrade who had been lying in ambush and firing just moments before would suddenly become a flying man, shooting out from behind the boulder as if a spring had been fitted beneath his backside, to crash to the ground dead or alive?

But just as they stood there in astonishment, unable to fathom what had happened, the unexpected struck again!

"Awooo—" Another scream, and another member of the concealed musketeer squad fulfilled his dream of being Superman. Whoosh — out he flew, slamming into the ground. This time he did not even twitch; he simply passed out cold, his life or death unknown...

"What's going on? What's going on? Wei Zhao, did you bring men?" A wary look came over Zhen Yingjun's face at once. Even a fool could tell by now that something had gone wrong — and that whatever it was, it must be connected to Wei Zhao!

"I didn't." Wei Zhao shook his head. "I really didn't bring anyone. You told me to come alone, so I came alone."

"This..." Zhen Yingjun was taken aback by Wei Zhao's certainty. It was not that he disbelieved him; after all, whether Wei Zhao admitted to bringing others or not no longer mattered — the two sides had already come to blows, and there was no need for Wei Zhao to lie! Yet Wei Zhao insisted he had brought no one, and that left Zhen Yingjun rather puzzled.

Just as Zhen Yingjun was puzzling over it, another hidden musketeer became a flying man — whoosh — out he flew and hit the ground like a corpse!

"The enemy has help... seems it's not a person..." Ma Zhu knitted his brows and spoke word by word.

He was a master of the external school, skilled in both attack and defense, but his eyesight was poor. He had judged only from the signs before him.

"Young Master Jun, perhaps we should fall back a little first? It's a bit dangerous here!" one of the black-clad bodyguards beside Zhen Yingjun suggested cautiously.

"All right!" Zhen Yingjun was somewhat frightened too, and no longer dared stand out front putting on airs. He retreated behind Gu Mengyao and Shen Yushu, using the two of them as human shields.

When Gu Mengyao and Shen Yushu saw that Wei Zhao had come to rescue them, they were in truth deeply stirred. Though Gu Mengyao knew it must be terribly dangerous for Wei Zhao to come here, the moment she saw him appear, a sudden sense of reassurance came over her.

It was the feeling of having found someone to lean on, and in an instant her earlier fear and tension were gone. It was a good feeling, a warm one.

But Gu Mengyao and Shen Yushu had no idea that Zhen Yingjun had planted gunmen nearby. They had only been brought out of the cave just before Wei Zhao arrived, so when gunfire began crackling from every direction, the two of them were frightened half out of their wits.

They even forgot to cry out, forgot that they too were in danger, and watched Wei Zhao tensely. They wanted to warn him to be careful, yet feared to distract him, so the two sisters, with perfect understanding, both chose silence.

Only when they saw Wei Zhao successfully dodge the bullets did Gu Mengyao and Shen Yushu breathe a sigh of relief. It seemed Wei Zhao was really quite formidable. Did that fool Zhen Yingjun think he could kill Wei Zhao with guns? Not a chance!

And then, as Gu Mengyao and Shen Yushu watched Zhen Yingjun's musketeers come flying out of their hiding places one after another and plummet to their deaths on the ground, the two of them were as astonished as Zhen Yingjun himself. But a moment later, a strange light flickered across Gu Mengyao's eyes.

"Xiaoshu, isn't that General Mighty?" Gu Mengyao said softly to Shen Yushu, a note of uncertainty in her voice.

"Oh?" Hearing Gu Mengyao's words, Shen Yushu rubbed her eyes in disbelief. "Good grief, it's true what they say - near vermilion one turns red, near ink one turns black. General Mighty has spent so long with Arrow-Brand Bro that he's turned fierce too - he's practically an Arrow-Brand Dog now!"

Of course, their words did not reach Zhen Yingjun's ears. He was too terrified now to spare any thought for eavesdropping on Gu Mengyao and Shen Yushu. What was happening before his eyes was a little too eerie. Wei Zhao had plainly come up alone - his own subordinate had told him so in person, and that subordinate was still stationed at the foot of the mountain at this very moment; no one but Wei Zhao had come up. So how had his men died?
