Chapter 768 — The Cards Were Stacked
"Hah, let's hope every word of that is true, and no tricks. You'd better reap what you sow." Wei Zhao nodded. He had no wish to linger either, and led Tang Zhi, Mother Tang, Gu Mengyao, and Shen Yushu out of Zhao Qibing's office.
As Shen Yushu was leaving, she seemed a little reluctant to go. "Zhao Qibing, your skyscraper — when it collapsed last time, was there any video?"
"What do you want?" Zhao Qibing frowned, thinking to himself that this Shen Yushu was a real pest.
"Oh, nothing. I just thought it would be fun. I'd like to have a look," Shen Yushu said.
"No, there isn't! Now get going!" Zhao Qibing was furious. He waved his hand at Shen Yushu and spoke with impatience.
"Oh, what a shame. Then next time your skyscraper collapses, be sure to let me know in advance so I can come and watch!" Shen Yushu said, disappointed.
"There won't be a next time!" Zhao Qibing nearly leapt up out of his wheelchair. Mother of God — are you here on purpose to pick a fight? Just wait, I'll blow you to bits in a moment!
"Xiaoshu!" Gu Mengyao tugged at Shen Yushu, telling her not to say such things. This was, after all, someone else's territory, and Gu Mengyao was afraid that loose talk from Shen Yushu might cause trouble.
Shen Yushu stuck out her tongue and followed Wei Zhao out of the office. The group took the elevator down to the underground parking garage.
Meanwhile, the four in the office — Zhao Qibing, Li Cihua, Su Jiaonang, and Zhang Yuzhou — went back into the adjoining surveillance room. Watching the monitors, they saw Wei Zhao and the others all get into the car, and at once burst into loud laughter.
"Haha, what the hell is the use of Wei Zhao's martial arts? Won't he still get blown to death by a bomb?" Zhao Qibing laughed heartily.
"Exactly. Even with a check in hand, he won't live to cash it. When it goes 'boom' and explodes, the check will be blown to powder, and he won't be able to cash it," Su Jiaonang said with a cold sneer.
Earlier, when Zhao Qibing and Li Cihua were discussing the matter, it was Su Jiaonang who had suggested paying Wei Zhao off with a check. Once a transfer went through, the money could not be taken back — but with a check, so long as it was blown to shreds, not a single cent would be missing from the bank.
"Mm, Su Jiaonang, you're a sly one. This move is a good one — not only does it kill Wei Zhao, it saves us a huge sum of money!" Zhao Qibing said approvingly.
"Ha, and isn't that thanks to Young Master Bing's training? A piddling trick like this is beneath Young Master Bing even to think about. Young Master Bing is a man who does great things; scheming and plotting is better left to us underlings," Su Jiaonang said modestly.
"Mm. Zhang Yuzhou, there's no problem with the time bomb, is there?" Zhao Qibing nodded and looked toward Zhang Yuzhou.
"Don't worry, Young Master Bing. What I got is N explosive, and a whole big pack of it. Never mind a minivan — it could level a skyscraper!" Zhang Yuzhou said smugly. "This time, there's no way Wei Zhao survives. Only, I'm afraid that when it blows, it might catch other people in it..."
"Catch other people? Then that's none of our business. Who told those idiots to go near their car? If they get blown up, they deserve it!" Why would Zhao Qibing care about anyone else's life or death? In his view, so long as Wei Zhao was dead, that was enough. Whether anyone else lived or died was simply their own bad luck.
"That's right too. Who told them to go near Wei Zhao's car? Getting blown up is their own fault!" Zhang Yuzhou echoed. "I set the bomb to go off in twenty minutes. Given the current traffic, twenty minutes from Qibing Tower is absolutely not enough to reach the First People's Hospital, the villa where Wei Zhao lives, the First Expert, or the nearest bank where the check could be cashed — anywhere at all. So unless Wei Zhao parks in the middle of the road and gets out to walk, he's a dead man for sure!"
"Good, then let's just sit back and wait for the good news!" Zhao Qibing nodded, feeling incomparably exhilarated. What goes around comes around — the hour simply hadn't come yet. And now? However capable Wei Zhao was, however great an expert, in the end wouldn't he still be blown to death by him?
Wei Zhao got into the car. He had just started the engine when the jade pendant gave a leap — the signal of danger had come through!
There really was something wrong. Wei Zhao's heart tightened, and without betraying anything on his face, he shut off the engine again.
"Tick... tick..."
Inside the car came a faint sound, like the second hand of a mechanical clock.
A time bomb — that was Wei Zhao's first thought!
It had already been more than a month since he arrived in Songshan City, yet Wei Zhao had still not forgotten the cruelty of the battlefield.
Inside the car, no such sound could possibly have come through. But since the jade pendant had already transmitted its signal of danger, Wei Zhao naturally had no doubt that a time bomb had been planted in his car.
In an instant, Wei Zhao understood why Zhao Qibing had sent him today to discuss the demolition compensation. So this was the scheme he had been plotting.
Keep him steady during the negotiations, and then, in the deserted parking garage of the tower, fit a time bomb to his car without the slightest scruple.
That way, once he drove the car out of the building, it would take only a short while before the bomb went off, and he and everyone in the car would be blown to fragments. A fine little calculation indeed.
And so Wei Zhao also understood why Zhao Qibing had not paid by transfer but had substituted a check instead.
Once the car exploded, the check would naturally be shredded to bits as well, and the money in the bank would suffer no loss whatsoever. This Zhao Qibing was no fool.
Having grasped Zhao Qibing's design, Wei Zhao gave a faint, cold laugh. Telling him not to meddle in the shantytown demolition? What a fine pretext.
Had it been someone less alert, that person would probably have fallen for it already. Fortunately, Wei Zhao had never believed in Zhao Qibing's intentions from the very start; from beginning to end, he had kept his guard up.
Without betraying a thing, Wei Zhao started the car again and drove out of the underground garage of Qibing Tower. Once on the main road, he quickly pulled the car over into a dead corner by the roadside, a spot that could not be clearly seen from the top of the tower.
A sinister plan had already taken shape in Wei Zhao's mind, so he could not let Zhao Qibing and Li Cihua discover what he was doing now.
In fact, Zhao Qibing, Li Cihua, and the others were already wild with delight and were paying no attention at all to where Wei Zhao had gone after leaving Qibing Tower, because wherever he went made no difference. He could not escape death. So why keep watching him? Watch him too closely, and should someone later connect Wei Zhao's death to them, that would be bad.
