Chapter 745 — Whose Kidney Is It?

The Blossom Guardian

"It's... it just hurts. Apart from the pain, I don't feel anything else..." Zhong Yongliang shook his head.

"The wound will hurt too. In a few days we'll have the doctor run a thorough examination," Zhong Fabai said. "An Liwen's kidney-harvesting ring has been smashed, but who knows how Wei Zhao is doing?"

"Who knows? Best if he's dead!" Zhong Yongliang wanted nothing more than for Wei Zhao to die.

Zhong Fabai nodded. These past two days he had been at the hospital keeping Zhong Yongliang company and had not gone to see the young master, so he truly had no idea how Wei Zhao was faring.

From the corridor outside the ward came the intermittent sound of footsteps—clearly Zhong Yongliang's classmates had arrived. Father and son stopped discussing their earlier topic.

Sure enough, before long there was a knock at the door of the ward, and Zhong Fabai rose to answer it.

"Teacher Liu, thank you for bringing the whole class to visit Pinliang—truly, thank you all so much! For Pinliang to have such a wonderful teacher and classmates is his good fortune..." Zhong Fabai said gratefully as he opened the door, but before he could finish, his gaze landed on Wei Zhao standing beside Gu Mengyao! Zhong Fabai looked as though he had seen a ghost, eyes bulging: "Gah! You—Wei Zhao—"

"Oh? Uncle Zhong, you were looking for me?" Wei Zhao shrugged at Zhong Fabai, well aware of what had startled him. In Zhong Fabai's mind, he ought to be lying in a hospital bed just like his son; for him to appear here now, anything less than this expression would have been strange.

"You... you... what are you doing here?" Zhong Fabai lost some of his composure. He was somebody of consequence, after all, yet he still lost his composure—because this concerned his son's kidney! If his son's kidney was not Wei Zhao's, then whose was it?

Had Wei Zhao's kidney been harvested or not?

"Oh, I got hurt a few days ago. I'm fine now." Wei Zhao smiled.

Hearing this, Zhong Fabai breathed a sigh of relief—but then he thought again, and something was off. It had only been a few days since the kidney transplant; how could Wei Zhao be bouncing around like this? It made no logical sense! Even if Wei Zhao was a Mystic-rank expert, wasn't Uncle Zhu still lying in a hospital bed?

Wait—he said he was injured a few days ago. Could it be that time Uncle Zhu beat him?

"You... when were you injured?" Zhong Fabai asked instinctively.

"When Uncle Zhu beat me? You didn't know?" Wei Zhao countered.

"Then you... then Pinliang..." Zhong Fabai wanted to ask more, but it suddenly occurred to him that Zhong Yongliang's other classmates were present, so he was forced to stop. With his belly full of questions, all he could do was first invite Zhong Yongliang's teacher and classmates inside! Otherwise, if it aroused the police's suspicion, that would be terrible! There were still police officers patrolling the corridor, after all!

"Welcome, welcome, everyone, thank you for coming to visit Pinliang..." Zhong Fabai suppressed his doubts and let Wei Zhao and the others into the ward.

Zhong Yongliang lay on his side in the hospital bed, beaming as he welcomed his teacher and classmates, about to say a few words of thanks, when he suddenly spotted Wei Zhao among them—and he froze on the spot!

Hadn't Wei Zhao's kidney been harvested? Then he ought to be lying in a hospital right now—how could he still come visit him? How was that possible?

"Oh, Zhong Yongliang, I hear you're a whole man now, with two kidneys. As long as there's no rejection, you'll be just like the rest of us. You mustn't let it weigh on your mind!" Shen Yushu had wanted to needle Zhong Yongliang a bit, but thinking of what Teacher Liu had said earlier, she turned it into consolation instead.

Though somehow this consolation sounded rather awkward! No rejection and he would be just like them—so what if there was rejection?

"Thank you..." Zhong Yongliang's mind was now entirely elsewhere, not on Shen Yushu's sarcasm at all. Even if Shen Yushu were cursing his mother right now, he would hardly have felt a thing! His thoughts were completely fixed on Wei Zhao!

Had Wei Zhao's kidney been transplanted into him or not? If not, then whose kidney was now inside him?

Then wouldn't there be rejection... Suddenly he recalled Shen Yushu's earlier words—as long as there's no rejection, you'll be just like the rest of us... Was Shen Yushu hinting at something? Zhong Yongliang knew full well how close Shen Yushu and Wei Zhao were! So did Shen Yushu know something?

Was she hinting that the kidney in him was not Wei Zhao's—which would mean it would not match, and rejection would soon set in?

At this thought, Zhong Yongliang's mind went blank with a deafening roar, and his gaze turned somewhat vacant.

The illusion he had harbored until now was shattered completely in that instant. He had foolishly imagined that once he possessed Wei Zhao's kidney, he too would become a Yellow-rank expert—but now it seemed that whether his kidney would even match was a question in itself!

Zhong Yongliang had no idea how he endured that stretch of time. Not a single word of the consolation offered by his classmates and teachers registered; his mind was filled entirely with Wei Zhao, his own kidney, and Shen Yushu's insinuating remark!

His kidney was not Wei Zhao's? Now it appeared that eight or nine times out of ten it was not—otherwise, after having his kidney cut out, how could Wei Zhao still be so kind as to come visit him? He might well have wanted to kill him, yet Wei Zhao had not done so, and had even come to see him openly and generously... Then did that not mean he himself...

It was not until the teachers and his fellow students had all left that Zhong Yongliang still lay on the bed with a vacant stare, no one knowing what he was thinking.

The teachers and classmates assumed that Zhong Yongliang, having just come out of surgery, was simply too weak to speak, and thought no more of it. After a brief look at him, they left the ward.

As Wei Zhao departed, he cast Zhong Yongliang a look laden with hidden meaning. Had this kid's kidney not yet shown signs of rejection?

Zhong Fabai, meanwhile, had his brows tightly knit—clearly he too had considered this tragic possibility: his son's kidney was not Wei Zhao's! Had the transplant been mismatched? But An Liwen's kidney-harvesting ring had already been wiped out, and finding out just whose kidney his son now carried was, for the moment, impossible!

There was not even anyone to hold accountable. Even if An Liwen had not been arrested, he had surely fled, and there was certainly no way to get in touch with him.

Zhong Fabai sighed. Why was his son's fate so bitter? After all the trouble of getting a new kidney, it was the wrong type?

"Dad, why did Wei Zhao come? What on earth is going on with my kidney?" The moment Wei Zhao and the others had left, Zhong Yongliang began screaming like a madman: "My kidney—whose is it?"
