Chapter 722 — Hit Another One?
But he only thought this; he certainly could not say it aloud. When he turned back around, his face was still all smiles: "Haha, then allow me to wish you every success in advance!"
The onlookers around them, hearing Wei Zhao say this, grew curious and crowded in to watch—to see whether he was just boasting or really had some skill.
Wei Zhao casually grabbed another sandbag and tossed it in what looked like an ordinary throw, not even aiming, not even putting his full strength into it.
The crowd was instantly disappointed, and the boss secretly rejoiced. They all assumed Wei Zhao had already won a grand prize, so the rest of the sandbags were just being thrown away carelessly, a way of giving up. But then something utterly unexpected happened!
"Bang!"
It struck again—right on the Pleasant Goat plush the boss had just set out. It didn't even wobble; the sandbag Wei Zhao threw knocked it straight to the ground.
"Huh?" The boss let out a cry of despair, though it was instantly drowned out by the cheering of the bystanders.
"Amazing, he hit it again—absolutely amazing!"
"Boss, I want to play too—give me ten yuan's worth!"
"I'll take twenty yuan's worth. I don't believe it—me, Li Tianzhu, known as the Invincible Lucky Star, outdone by him?"
The boss, heart aching, handed the Pleasant Goat plush to Wei Zhao—but hearing everyone eager to give it a try, he breathed a sigh of relief. Thank goodness the advertising effect was obvious; all this had brought him no small number of customers!
Wei Zhao took the Pleasant Goat plush and handed it to Gu Mengyao.
"Give it to Tang Zhi?" The young lady was a little embarrassed to accept it. Tang Zhi was still there, and Gu Mengyao felt she shouldn't be the first to take a plush—Shen Yushu had already claimed one, and if she took another as well, it just wouldn't feel right.
"Oh, there's still one sandbag left—I'll win her one too." Wei Zhao weighed the last sandbag in his hand and said.
The boss, who was arranging his plushes, nearly keeled over and fainted at Wei Zhao's words! Win another one? Wouldn't that mean losing even more money? How was he supposed to stay in business?
Yet he had no way to stop Wei Zhao from throwing—that would ruin his business even more. When people missed, you took their money quick enough; when they hit, you wouldn't let them keep playing? What kind of logic was that?
So the boss could only stand there gritting his teeth, praying Wei Zhao wouldn't hit it! If he lost three plushes in a single day, he'd have nothing to show for all his work these past days!
But reality would not proceed as he prayed. If his prayers truly worked, he'd have been a millionaire long ago and wouldn't be running a stall here.
"Bang!"
The last sandbag hit the biggest plush on the shelf with no suspense at all—this one a Fox Spirit plush.
The boss nearly had a heart attack. His vision went dark and he felt about to faint—thankfully, he knew that if he truly collapsed, he'd become the laughingstock of the crowd. So he could only endure the pain and hand the Fox Spirit plush to Wei Zhao, offering his congratulations: "Young man, you really are something—three in a row!"
"Ha, not bad, I suppose," Wei Zhao said mildly, taking the Fox Spirit plush and handing it to Tang Zhi: "This one's for you."
Compared to Pleasant Goat and Gray Wolf, Tang Zhi liked the Fox Spirit better; seeing Wei Zhao give it to her, she couldn't help but feel delighted: "Thank you."
"Oh, oh, oh—Arrowhead Bro, you're amazing! Want to buy another ten yuan's worth?" Shen Yushu asked with a mischievous grin, seeing the boss's stiff smile.
"All right, Xiaoshu, let's go look at something else and leave the chance to others." Gu Mengyao also knew when to stop; these small-time vendors had it hard enough, and these few plushes alone were worth nearly a thousand yuan—the boss must be heartsick!
But Gu Mengyao was not about to offer him any compensation. That was how business worked—sometimes you lost, sometimes you gained. Even her daddy did not turn a profit on every deal he made.
Wei Zhao had no intention of throwing any more sandbags either. Together with Gu Mengyao, Shen Yushu, and Tang Zhi, he left the sandbag stall behind.
The boss finally let out a breath of relief. It seemed that one who often walks by the river would sooner or later get his shoes wet—even his foam adhesive was not entirely reliable! Still, a loss was a loss; had it not drawn in this many people? The boss did not believe anyone else here had an arm as strong as Wei Zhao's. In the end, would he not earn it all back?
Sure enough, with Wei Zhao's demonstration serving as advertisement, the boss had turned misfortune into blessing. More and more people came to throw sandbags, and in the blink of an eye the boss had taken in several hundred yuan, while what he had given out amounted to no more than a few dozen yuan worth of trinkets. Once again the boss was grinning from ear to ear.
But he had rejoiced a little too soon. Not long after Wei Zhao left, another young man hit the grand prize—the biggest plush! Only it did not fall.
The young man was visibly displeased. "I hit it too, so why didn't it fall?"
"Your arm just isn't strong enough—that young fellow from before had a mighty arm!" the boss thought to himself. Could he really let them win every single time? How would he stay in business then?
"My arm isn't strong? I'm a fitness instructor at a gym—why shouldn't I believe my arm is stronger than that fair-faced pretty boy's?" The young man glared, unconvinced. "Tell me, have you rigged something here?"
"What could I possibly rig? That man knocked down three grand prizes in one go—everyone saw it!" The boss was sounding a little guilty.
"That's right, why did he hit three? I've got it—he must be a shill you hired, deliberately letting us see him win so he could lure the rest of us into spending our money, isn't that so?" the young man demanded.
"Impossible, I don't even know them!" This time the boss had some confidence—he truly did not know Wei Zhao and the others.
"If that's the case, then let me inspect that plush and see whether there's a problem with it!" Still unconvinced, the young man shoved the boss aside and strode toward the rack where the prizes were displayed.
"You can't just come in here!" The boss hurried to stop him, but how could he be a match for a fitness instructor? In no time at all he was shoved aside, and the young man reached for the biggest plush. He grabbed it once—it would not budge.
He froze for a moment, then grabbed it again with all his strength—and saw that the shelf beneath the plush was plastered with strips of foam adhesive! The young man gave a cold laugh. "Well, well? Is this how you cheat people? It's all foam adhesive underneath—no matter how strong a man's arm is, from that distance he could never knock these loose! Aren't you just swindling people?"
The boss was instantly dumbstruck. Seeing that he had been exposed and that there was no way to cover it up, he rushed to defend himself: "This... I had foam adhesive on it just now too, and that man still knocked it down..."
