Chapter 637 — Give Them a Warning
"Brother Wen, do you mean — as we discussed before, you want a taste of her?" The tattooed man's heart skipped. He was thinking that Brother Wen had nerve and to spare — daring to lay hands on a policewoman?
"Of course not!" An Liwen said. "She knows me. I've no wish to go looking for death. Besides, she's the woman Chen Yuxuan has his eye on — how could I possibly touch her?"
"Then what did you mean, Brother Wen?" The tattooed man was rather perplexed.
"Hasn't the police force been dogging our heels lately? Well then — perfect. Since they won't let us be, we'll give them an iron-hard lesson, teach them that some things are better viewed with one eye shut!" An Liwen gave a cold laugh. "Tell me — if the captain of the criminal investigation unit had a kidney cut out, what would the police do?"
"Ha — that would be a humiliation beyond words!" The tattooed man burst out laughing.
"Exactly. I mean to teach the police a lesson — call it a warning, if you like. Let them know that not everything is theirs to meddle in, and that peaceable coexistence is best. Otherwise the consequences will be very severe!" An Liwen said. "Pump knockout gas into the dungeon and put her under!"
"Oh?" The tattooed man blinked. "Put her under?"
"From what I know, this Qiu Lingshan is a Yellow-rank expert. None of our men are a match for her!" An Liwen said. "The girl must be counting on risking herself to slip into headquarters, so she's been hiding her true strength all along. Very well — we'll grant her wish and let her go on hiding, right up until she loses a kidney!"
"Understood!" The tattooed man nodded hastily, thinking to himself that An Liwen was ruthless indeed — willing to cut a kidney out of a woman this beautiful! And her identity was no simple matter, either!
"Wait — have every man at our suburban relay station pull out. Starting tomorrow, activate Station No. 3. Abandon this one outright." An Liwen stopped the tattooed man as he turned to leave. "Qiu Lingshan should be carrying a signal transmitter. That station is already compromised!"
"Yes, sir!" The tattooed man acknowledged the order, then turned and left.
Watching the tattooed man's retreating back, An Liwen shook his head slightly. "Brother Yutian, oh Brother Yutian, I really am sorry. Who told you to set your heart on such a troublesome woman? If she had gone back to the Chen family with you like a good girl, how would she be losing a kidney?"
Still, Qiu Lingshan was no more than a minor episode; he did not take her to heart at all. Cutting out her kidney would produce only two outcomes: either the police would beat a quiet retreat, or they would fly into a furious rage.
But even if they flew into a rage, what of it? They still could not find where his headquarters was. And Qiu Lingshan had clearly been driven past all endurance, which was why she had risked herself, posing as a captive to slip into headquarters.
An Liwen did not take her to heart in the least. He was a ruthless man and cared nothing for such things. What vexed him now was the matter of Wei Zhao! An Liwen was furious — that brat Wei Zhao had turned thief in his own house, getting involved with both Gu Mengyao and Shen Yushu?
An Liwen did not believe there was anything pure left between Wei Zhao and Gu Mengyao. They had even kissed — so what was there left that they could not do? Gu Mengyao was the wife he had reserved for himself, and he would absolutely not permit her to be with Wei Zhao!
An Liwen's feelings for Gu Mengyao came from the depths of his heart, verging on madness. It had been his dream since childhood to take Gu Mengyao as his wife! Over the years An Liwen had enjoyed no small number of women, some of them beautiful, foreign and domestic alike, yet he remained unable to forget Gu Mengyao — a fixation lodged in his very character.
Even if something had already happened between Gu Mengyao and Wei Zhao, he would still bring her home, even if only to set her there and visit her every day — he would make her his own! Of course, if Gu Mengyao were still untouched, An Liwen would let bygones be bygones.
"Wei Zhao, how would you like to die?" A cold, sinister smile flickered at the corner of An Liwen's mouth — the smile he always wore before doing something wicked. "Since you don't know what's good for you, don't blame me for being unkind. Your kidney is mine as well."
When Qiu Lingshan's transmitter signal vanished, Liu Wangli and the others knew at once that something was wrong. Without hesitation they dispatched men to the spot where her signal had disappeared — a stretch of barren countryside, with an abandoned factory not far off the empty highway.
But after Liu Wangli's men surrounded the factory, they came up empty! There was not a soul inside. Yet the occupants had clearly left in a hurry, and not long ago at that!
The light bulbs were still warm to the touch, proof that they had been burning until recently. Instant-noodle wrappers and other food trash lay scattered across the floor, along with some ragged lengths of rope.
Plainly, the other side had been on their guard! And precisely because of that, Liu Wangli grew all the more anxious: it meant the enemy had seen through Qiu Lingshan's identity and fled in panic — and the signal transmitter on her person had no doubt been found and destroyed.
At the thought, Liu Wangli was seized with alarm. After a moment's hesitation, he dialed the number of Yang Huaijun, the bureau chief in charge.
"Chief Yang, this is Liu Wangli of the criminal investigation unit. Were you asleep?" It was already past midnight, and Liu Wangli feared Yang Huaijun had gone to bed.
"Just fell asleep — what is it?" Yang Huaijun's internal injuries had clearly been improving ever since he began taking the Chinese medicine Wei Zhao had prepared for him. The pain was gone entirely now; he could sleep soundly without any need for painkillers, and so being woken by the phone brought him no particular discomfort.
"Chief Yang, something seems to have happened to Captain Song..." Liu Wangli said cautiously.
"Happened? What happened? Give me the details!" The moment Yang Huaijun heard that Qiu Lingshan was in trouble, every trace of drowsiness vanished. He sat up and pressed for answers.
"It's like this — Captain Song located the gang's base of operations, and so..." Liu Wangli then laid out the whole affair of Qiu Lingshan's undercover work for Yang Huaijun in detail.
"Who authorized her to go? Why was no permission requested beforehand?" Hearing Liu Wangli out, Yang Huaijun was beside himself with fury.
"Captain Song decided it herself. I assumed she had already cleared it with you..." Liu Wangli broke into a cold sweat. He was only the squadron leader; the final decision on this matter had been reported by Qiu Lingshan directly to Yang Huaijun. How could he have gone over her head to report it himself?
"Stay where you are — I'm on my way to the bureau!" Yang Huaijun was truly at his wit's end, angry and worried in equal measure. Qiu Lingshan and her reckless heroics — what business did she have going undercover? Did she think she was some kind of tough nut now? RO
