Chapter 521 — Kang Jinglong's Cunning

"Exactly! This is an opportunity, and I've been turning over in my mind how to make use of it!" Divine Physician Kang smiled and said, "If it were only this one opportunity, it would not be enough—but with the Wu family's support, we are like a tiger with wings. Put the two together, and they will have no choice but to agree to our Kang family becoming a great clan!"

"Wonderful!" Kang Jinglong was rather excited. "In that case, I need not keep up such a good relationship with that Wang Xinyan after all. True, the girl is quite pretty, but the Xiao family is simply finished, and Wang Xinyan is not strictly a Xiao anyway. If our Kang family really can become a great clan, then I can find someone of far more matching station!"

"Mm, well said. Zhaolong, you are excellent—you know to put the family's interests and the bigger picture first!" Divine Physician Kang said. "You are a man cut out for great things!"

"Grandfather, I am the eldest son and eldest grandson of the Kang family, so of course I must always put the family's interests first!" Kang Jinglong said. "It is only a bit of a pity—that girl Wang Xinyan really is captivating. She would be fine for a bit of fun, only the Xiao family, fallen as it is, is still a great clan; she is not someone you can toy with and then cast aside. Better to touch her as little as possible!"

"Quite right!" Divine Physician Kang nodded as well. "Your younger brother is clear on this point. He plays with women, yes, but only women with no power and no backing, the kind he can settle things with afterward! It is only his temperament—spoiled rotten since childhood!"

"Heh heh, Grandfather, actually I think Zhaoming being the way he is may not be a bad thing for our Kang family!" Kang Jinglong said. "Some things we cannot do, but Zhaoming can!"

"Oh?" Divine Physician Kang was taken aback, looking at his eldest grandson with some puzzlement, unsure what he meant. "Zhaolong, are you afraid Zhaoming will contend with you for the position of family head in the future?"

"Of course not!" Kang Jinglong smiled faintly. "If Zhaoming truly has the makings for it, I would naturally step aside and yield to the worthy. Even if I become family head, I will not shut him out. As long as the Kang family prospers, his branch will never want for anything—and what I said before was sincere!"

Hearing Kang Jinglong speak this way, Divine Physician Kang was rather surprised, for this was the first time his eldest grandson had opened his heart to him, speaking of his own ambitions and his considerations regarding the future of the Kang family and Kang Jingming.

"That you can think this way—I am very gratified. Then tell me, why is Zhaoming being the way he is not a bad thing?" Divine Physician Kang asked with keen interest.

"That Wei Zhao is no simple matter! Though I still do not know his background, from the fact that he runs with Guan Xuewen and Lai Changshan, this fellow is no good sort!" Kang Jinglong said. "And Guan Xuewen has set up Guan Doctor Pharmaceuticals and produced a Life-Extending Detox Pill—who knows what other flagship products he has. Our Kang family is very much on the back foot!"

"Indeed! Damn it all, it makes my blood boil just to mention it!" Divine Physician Kang said angrily. "Isn't this learning from me and stealing our business?"

"Yes. However, I hear Guan Xuewen has a granddaughter—quite pretty, a nurse at the hospital now—about Zhaoming's age." Kang Jinglong spoke calmly.

"You mean…" Divine Physician Kang was startled. "You want your brother to marry Guan Xuewen's granddaughter?"

"Marry? Is the Guan family worthy? Never mind that Guan Xuewen's standing is now stronger than our Kang family's, and in outsiders' eyes he is a true divine physician, seemingly more esteemed than you, Grandfather—but in my eyes, that is only a fleeting glory!" Kang Jinglong said with disdain. "Prosperity is but a dream. The day Guan Xuewen keels over, their Guan family will be finished at once!"

"You see it very clearly indeed! Even I had not thought of that!" Divine Physician Kang burst into laughter upon hearing this. "Haha, I was still fretting over this matter, but hearing you say that, I am suddenly at ease!"

"Exactly, so marriage with the Guan family is out of the question. But before Guan Xuewen dies, having Zhaoming go after his granddaughter and bring back a bit of inside information would be greatly to our Kang family's advantage—who knows, he might even get hold of the secret formula!" Kang Jinglong said.

"Oh? That would work too?" Divine Physician Kang's eyes went wide. All along he had thought himself thoroughly shrewd and calculating, but now he found that his eldest grandson was even more of a scoundrel.

"Why not? Zhaoming is a master of romance to begin with—what woman can he not win over? Give this matter to him, and it will be done!" Kang Jinglong said. "In the future, even if I become family head, I will split the family fortune with him—half to him! So long as he renders this great service!"

Divine Physician Kang nodded. This was also the first time he had come to know his eldest grandson's mind and plans. Since he could declare himself thus, Divine Physician Kang was reassured! Though the Kang family was now flourishing day by day, what Divine Physician Kang feared most was that after he was gone, the brothers Kang Jinglong and Kang Jingming would fight for power and profit and tear the Kang family apart!

But now, with these words from Kang Jinglong, he was at ease handing the Kang family over to him! At this thought, Divine Physician Kang said, "Very well. This matter still requires long deliberation—we cannot be rash. Only after we have studied it thoroughly can we act!"

"Yes, I was only speaking of Zhaoming's usefulness! In fact, looking across the great clans, every family has a son who is something of a wastrel. Are they truly all wastrels? Some may be genuine, but some, I suspect, were deliberately cultivated!" Kang Jinglong said. "And these wastrels exist so that they can do the things others cannot do in the ordinary way!"

"Indeed, you boy, you do have a head on your shoulders!" Divine Physician Kang nodded. "As for courting Guan Xuewen's granddaughter—if an ordinary man did it, he truly could not pull it off. To court her and then cast her aside would badly damage the family's name. But let Zhaoming do it, and no one will say a word, because Zhaoming is a wastrel to begin with! If he does it, so be it—it has always been this way; one can only say that this time he went a bit too far!"

"Heh heh, Grandfather, that is exactly what I meant!" Kang Jinglong nodded.

"Mm. Tomorrow morning I will go contact the Yu family, and you contact Wu Chengtian. We will go together, then discuss the matter of our family being elevated to a great clan!" Divine Physician Kang decided, somewhat excited.
