Chapter 466 — Wei Zhao Makes His Move
And Zhong Yongliang, catching sight of Feng Xiaoxiao, felt his eyes light up. He swam swiftly toward her—he meant to redirect the trouble, to draw the shark's attention onto Feng Xiaoxiao!
At any other time Zhong Yongliang would never have dared do such a thing; after all, he was afraid of Feng Xiaoxiao too. But now his life was at stake, and he had no choice but to do it—better a friend die than himself. The shark would bite him at any moment; what did Zhong Yongliang still care about? If he could shift the shark's attention and make it attack Feng Xiaoxiao, he would be free of it.
Sure enough, the shark's attention was drawn to Feng Xiaoxiao, and it swam straight for her.
"Leader! That shark..." Kang Xiaoyuanbo started in alarm, pointing at the shark and crying out in the direction of its swim toward Feng Xiaoxiao.
Wei Zhao frowned; he naturally saw that Zhong Yongliang had lured the shark to Feng Xiaoxiao's side. Whether Zhong Yongliang got bitten to death by the shark was of no concern to Wei Zhao at all—better still if he died.
But Feng Xiaoxiao, though Wei Zhao had no particular fondness for her, could hardly be said to be repulsed by her either; and if she were to be eaten by the shark for no reason at all, Wei Zhao would truly feel some sympathy for her.
If she were a stranger, he might simply let it be. But she was, after all, his deskmate, and she had fooled around with him all this time; Wei Zhao did feel a measure of attachment to her. At this moment he had no choice but to rise to his feet and walk toward the seaside.
"Feng Xiaoxiao, you silly girl, get out of the way!" Wei Zhao could not help shouting.
"Huh?" Feng Xiaoxiao was startled by Wei Zhao. She lifted her head and saw Zhong Yongliang swimming desperately toward her, with a shark following behind him!
Feng Xiaoxiao's face immediately changed. The fake shark Zhong Yongliang had made earlier—with Wei Zhao's reminder she had spotted its flaw. But this one was clearly a real shark; otherwise Zhong Yongliang would not be swimming so fast! Yet the boy was simply too wicked. Fleeing was one thing, but he had to come fleeing her way, plainly meaning to draw the shark's attention onto her.
Feng Xiaoxiao was furious and terrified, yet hesitated. The bracelet her mother had left her was lost right here; if she ran off now, it would be difficult afterward to pin down the spot again, and then her hope of ever getting it back would grow even slimmer...
"What are you thinking about?" Wei Zhao was somewhat exasperated. Feng Xiaoxiao usually seemed quite clever, so why had she turned so dull and foolish at the critical moment?
"I... my bracelet..." Feng Xiaoxiao said anxiously.
Wei Zhao was speechless. Her life was nearly gone, and she was still looking for a bracelet? What sort of thinking was that? But Feng Xiaoxiao had not moved, and even if she ran back, it was probably too late. Wei Zhao could only jump into the sea in his clothes and swim over.
Though Zhong Yongliang's life or death was nothing to do with Wei Zhao, this silly girl Feng Xiaoxiao... he did not want her to die either.
Feng Xiaoxiao was somewhat shocked. She had not expected Wei Zhao to jump into the sea at this moment to save her, and it gave her a sense of disbelief. Was this really Wei Zhao?
Wei Zhao swam over quickly, paying Feng Xiaoxiao no mind. The shark had already come, and Zhong Yongliang had actually, in his cowardice, hidden himself behind Feng Xiaoxiao.
Dealing with sharks was old hat to Wei Zhao. Though this was deep water, his feet could still reach the bottom, giving him a foothold, and with the strength of a late-stage Yellow-rank peak he could slay the shark with a single punch. But that would be far too startling and shocking, so Wei Zhao planned to use his previous method: strike once with his fist, then use the tree branch in his hand to *** the shark's gills.
The shark was finished off by Wei Zhao with dispatch. The most shocked of all were Zhong Yongliang and Feng Xiaoxiao. Zhong Yongliang had not expected Wei Zhao to deal with a shark so easily—and he had actually made an enemy of him...
Feng Xiaoxiao, too, was shocked by the sheer strength of Wei Zhao's ability. Watching his movements, there was no sloppiness about them at all; such a man was indeed worth Gu Pengzhan's paying a high price to hire.
As for the other students in the class, the precedent of Shen Yushu killing a shark earlier with a single cobblestone had already led most of them to believe that sharks could be killed quite easily, so they felt no particular shock at Wei Zhao's killing another shark.
"You wanted to get me killed!" Feng Xiaoxiao came to her senses, and the first thing she did was lash out a kick at Zhong Yongliang, landing it squarely in his crotch and sending him howling in agony, his eyes rolling back as he nearly toppled into the sea!
Feng Xiaoxiao had put all her strength into that kick; she was furious beyond measure. Zhong Yongliang had practically committed robbery and murder—luring the shark over to bite her, what difference was there between that and outright murder?
So Feng Xiaoxiao showed no mercy at all; if she had kicked Zhong Yongliang to death, he would only have deserved it.
Zhong Yongliang knew he was in the wrong. After the kick, though the pain was unbearable, he still clutched his crotch and cautiously made his way back to shore, where he sat on the sand, too pained to speak, his face ashen. Gao Xiaofu hurried over to console him.
By now, no one in the class pitied Zhong Yongliang anymore, for what he had done earlier was simply too low—it had sunk to the level of sheer meanness. Unable to beat the shark himself, he had drawn the shark toward someone else! Was that not a bit too vicious?
One could well imagine: if the person in the sea at that moment had not been Feng Xiaoxiao but someone else, would Zhong Yongliang have lured the shark over just the same? And had Wei Zhao not appeared in the nick of time, would that person in the water have ended up food for the fish?
"Silly girl, why didn't you run just now?" Wei Zhao was rather vexed by Feng Xiaoxiao's failure to flee. If she had run, he would not have had to go into the water at all. Now he was soaked through and thoroughly uncomfortable.
"I... the bracelet my mother left me..." Only then did Feng Xiaoxiao remember that the bracelet had not yet been found. Paying no heed to the shark's blood still fouling the water, she bent down to search for it.
"What bracelet? You'd throw your life away for it?" Wei Zhao was caught between laughter and tears at her words.
"It's the keepsake my mother left me..." Feng Xiaoxiao looked at Wei Zhao a little embarrassed, yet her gaze did not falter. That bracelet meant far too much to her; she could not bear to lose it.
"A keepsake?" This time it was Wei Zhao's turn to be struck dumb. But if it truly was as Feng Xiaoxiao said, then he could understand why she would risk her life to search for the bracelet. What surprised him, though, was that Feng Xiaoxiao had no mother.
"My mother left when I was very small..." Feng Xiaoxiao shook her head, a faint trace of sorrow passing through her eyes.
Wei Zhao sighed. He had not expected Feng Xiaoxiao to have such a side to her. He reached casually into the water and felt about, then extended a hand and drew up Feng Xiaoxiao's right hand...
