Chapter 325 — Waiting for You Ten Years
"Admire him?" Wei Zhao curled his lip as if to laugh. "Sorry to disappoint you, but I really don't know him. And I don't think admiration is quite what I'd call it. A girl like you turns up in Blue City talking about how she worships the leader of the Water Blue Gang — you honestly expect me to believe that?"
The cool girl's expression froze for a moment, though on that cool little face of hers it was hard to tell. "Of course. What else would you think it was?"
"I'm not thinking anything." Wei Zhao gave a snort. "That Mitsubishi van behind us has been tailing us for a long while now. Do you know them or not?"
"Mitsubishi van?" The cool girl blinked, startled, and turned to look back. But when she turned around again, a flicker of indignation crossed her face — gone in an instant, smoothed back into its usual cool composure. "Never seen them."
"Never seen them? Fine, then. We lose them." Wei Zhao downshifted and floored it, and the old Santana roared like a wild stallion and shot forward, instantly opening a great gap between them and the Mitsubishi van behind. Then he started weaving through the back roads, turning left and right and left again, ducking down another side street before the van could catch up. A few exchanges like that, and the van had vanished from sight entirely.
The cool girl watched, astonished, as Wei Zhao shifted, accelerated, and handled the car with effortless skill. A flash of shock crossed her cool little face. "You... how is your driving this good?"
"You ask a great many questions. Ever since you got in, it's been one thing after another. What exactly are you after?" Wei Zhao had run out of patience for small talk with this cool girl.
He had thought her face familiar, and she was from the East besides, so he'd figured he might as well give her a ride. But Wei Zhao had no wish to invite unnecessary trouble. Anyone asking questions like that was plainly not here on a sightseeing trip, and there was a car following them besides. This was one cool girl he wanted nothing more to do with.
"Who are you, really? You're not a member of the Water Blue Gang?" Only now did the cool girl realize something was off. She had jumped to conclusions earlier — seeing Wei Zhao's getup, and watching him drive out of the Water Blue Gang's headquarters, she had taken it for granted that he was one of their men. But now it looked as though Wei Zhao didn't know the roads at all, and was simply driving at random. True, he had shaken off the van behind them, but only because he drove so well.
What tipped her off was that Wei Zhao had turned the car into a dead end. Up ahead was a garbage dump; there was no road left to take. The roadside was lined with dilapidated one-story houses, plainly long abandoned — this had to be the city's refuse collection point... Even if Wei Zhao had been driving blindly in a panic, no member of the Water Blue Gang who knew the local roads would ever steer a car into a dead end like this!
Besides, the road hadn't been a dead end right away. There had been several turnoffs before this, and Wei Zhao had driven straight past every one of them. He clearly hadn't known the road ran out ahead!
And when she connected that with what Wei Zhao had said earlier, about not knowing the Kenhe Grand Hotel, the cool girl finally sensed that something was very wrong.
"No," Wei Zhao admitted frankly. "I only went there to buy a car. The cap was a gift from them."
"..." The cool girl was at a loss for words. She frowned, a little deflated and a little stung. Was she really nothing but a hothouse flower, incapable of standing on her own two feet?
He had already grown suspicious. This mission of hers, she feared, was not going to go smoothly.
At that thought, the cool girl's hand moved — a sharp dagger was in her grip. With a light thrust, she drove it toward Wei Zhao's chest.
Smack. Wei Zhao caught her wrist.
"You—" The cool girl had never imagined he could catch her hand! She might lack worldly experience, but her fighting skills were second to none — otherwise her family would never have let her go out on a mission alone.
She had confidence in her skill. She had struck when Wei Zhao was completely off guard. If she had read him right, he had been working out how to turn the car around and drive back.
And yet, even distracted as he was, Wei Zhao had caught her hand! The cool girl's heart lurched. She tried to pull her hand back, only to find his grip clamped tight as a crab's pincer, utterly immovable.
"You... let go of me!" Even as she spoke, the cool girl was not idle — her other hand balled into a fist and flew at Wei Zhao's face...
Wei Zhao frowned and tilted his head aside to dodge. "When you got back, didn't you ever look up the story of Mr. Dongguo? Seems all that talk from me last time was wasted. None of it sank in."
The cool girl froze, forgetting to press her attack. An incredulous look came over her cool little face. "You... you... you're the one who molested me last time?"
"I'm the one who saved your life!" Wei Zhao corrected her. "I saved you, and you come back to kill me — that's the classic ingrate's repayment. Today I kindly gave you a lift and patiently answered a whole pile of your questions, and now you try to kill me again."
"I..." A trace of grievance surfaced on Yang Qiqi's cool little face. It was only because I was afraid you'd ruin everything that I wanted to silence you for good! And last time — if you hadn't touched me and looked at my body, why would I have wanted to kill you?
All the way along, Wei Zhao kept watching the cool girl, trying to recall where he had seen her before, but he could never quite pin it down. Then, at the very moment she finally drew her blade, it came to him! This girl was the woman assassin he had met outside the pharmacy in Songshan — the one who had been bleeding so badly!
"You what? You!" Wei Zhao frowned. "I'll count to three. Get out of my car! A little cool girl who repays kindness with a knife — don't let me see you in front of me again, or I won't be so polite next time!"
Wei Zhao would admit that Yang Qiqi was beautiful, very beautiful indeed, but the thought of keeping a cool girl at his side who spent every waking moment scheming to kill him was not something he was willing to entertain! True, he could always sense it before she struck, and the jade pendant could give him warning in advance.
Yang Qiqi felt deeply wronged. Looking at Wei Zhao's murderous, scowling face, a touch of indignation showed on her cool little face. "Fine, I'll get out! A petty woman's revenge is never too late — ten years from now! I can't beat you now, but in ten years I'll come find you again!"
"Talk about that in ten years — if you're still alive by then," Wei Zhao said indifferently.
