Chapter 315 — That's Hardly Sincere of You
"Exactly. Yesterday I already put the word out that I was going to write Gu Mengyao a blood letter to declare my love. Sure, there was a little mishap, but if I don't write it now, what will people think of me? Won't they mock me as a coward?" Zhong Yongliang asked.
"Well..." Gao Xiaofu set down his schoolbag, somewhat hesitant. "Liang, to be honest, a real man ought to stand by his word. As I see it, whether people mock you or what they think of you has nothing to do with you at all! The key is what Gu Mengyao thinks. Her attitude is what really matters!"
"Right!" Zhong Yongliang slapped his thigh, suddenly enlightened. "Xiaofu, you've just woken me from a dream! Indeed, what do I care what anyone else thinks? The key is Gu Mengyao's attitude! But how am I supposed to know what she's thinking? Does she actually want me to write her a blood letter or not?"
"That..." Gao Xiaofu was uncertain too. "How about you just ask her?"
"How could I ask her that? Xiaofu, how about this — you go ask Shen Yushu? She's a good friend of Gu Mengyao's, so asking her would work too!" Zhong Yongliang suggested.
"That could work! I'll go ask!" Gao Xiaofu nodded, took out his phone, and sent Shen Yushu a text message.
With modern communication tools like mobile phones, there was no need to run over and ask in person anymore.
"Miss Shen Yushu, may I ask what Miss Gu Mengyao thinks about Liang writing that blood letter yesterday?"
Gao Xiaofu's message was very polite; he too was afraid Gu Mengyao would ignore him. But the worry was unnecessary — soon his phone received Shen Yushu's reply: "Yaoyao says Little Liangzi's hand is only good for being a squirt gun. The blood letter can be forgotten!"
Gao Xiaofu wanted to laugh but did not dare. He handed the phone to Zhong Yongliang.
After reading the message, Zhong Yongliang was somewhat baffled. "Xiaofu, what is she supposed to mean by that?"
"Liang, forgive me for speaking bluntly, but I get the feeling you've been looked down on by Gu Mengyao!" Gao Xiaofu said cautiously.
"Looked down on?" Zhong Yongliang was stunned. Looking at the message again, there really was a trace of contempt in it, and he grew anxious at once. "Xiaofu, what should I do then? Indeed, it seems Shen Yushu is mocking me for being utterly incapable of writing a blood letter!"
"How about this, Liang — you write another blood letter, to prove to them that you're not incapable, and that yesterday was just an accident?" Gao Xiaofu suggested.
"That'll have to do..." Zhong Yongliang nodded. There was no other way.
Gao Xiaofu hurriedly prepared a fresh sheet of white paper for Zhong Yongliang. Holding the carving knife, Zhong Yongliang found he could not bring himself to cut — not from fear of pain, but because yesterday's incident had left him with lingering dread!
What if he cut his finger and the bleeding just wouldn't stop again? Zhong Yongliang hesitated...
"Liang, what's wrong?" Noticing his hesitation, Gao Xiaofu asked quickly.
"I... Xiaofu, I don't quite dare to do it anymore! Yesterday was too damn terrifying!" The hand holding the carving knife trembled slightly.
And besides, if he cut today, he would surely have to use a different finger; he could hardly keep cutting on yesterday's wound — wouldn't that hurt to death? So Zhong Yongliang really could not bring himself to make the cut.
"Liang, a man has to be a little ruthless with himself! How about... I help you?" Gao Xiaofu asked.
"You help me?" Zhong Yongliang was startled, then said, "That works too! Xiaofu, you're a true friend. Since that's the case, I won't stand on ceremony! I'll treat you to a big meal at noon!"
"Huh?" Gao Xiaofu was startled as well, and then could not help but smile bitterly. His meaning had been that he would hold the carving knife and help Zhong Yongliang cut his finger open — but Zhong Yongliang had clearly misunderstood, thinking that Gao Xiaofu meant to cut his own finger and write the blood letter on his behalf...
"What's wrong?" Zhong Yongliang handed the carving knife to Gao Xiaofu. "Is there a problem?"
"N-no..." Gao Xiaofu had no choice but to take the knife, gritted his teeth, and cut open his own index finger. Blood came surging out at once, but there was no repeat of Zhong Yongliang's "bloodbath" from the day before.
"All right, Xiaofu, hold still - I'm going to use your finger to write a blood letter!" Zhong Yongliang said, seizing Gao Xiaofu's finger and beginning to write on the blank sheet of paper before him...
Little did he know, this scene had not gone unnoticed.
Not far away, Shen Yushu held up her phone and zoomed the camera all the way in, just close enough to see clearly what Zhong Yongliang and Gao Xiaofu were doing.
"Sister Yaoyao, this Zhong Yongliang really is something, isn't he? Using Gao Xiaofu's finger to write you a blood letter - that has to be the most insincere thing I've ever seen!" Shen Yushu said with a grin.
"Whose finger he uses is none of my business." Gu Mengyao paid her no attention and kept her eyes fixed on her book.
"Aww, how boring..." Shen Yushu put her phone away with a hint of regret. "I was hoping to watch Zhong Yongliang's finger turn into a water gun one more time!"
"..." Gu Mengyao was quite lost for words. What was so entertaining about that? Are you afraid Zhong Yongliang won't die fast enough?
Gu Mengyao frowned. She did not so much as glance in Zhong Yongliang's direction and ignored him completely.
But Shen Yushu, beaming from ear to ear, sprang to her feet and snatched the blood letter from Zhong Yongliang's hands: "Let me inspect it first - see if there are any problems?"
"Sure, sure!" Zhong Yongliang was overjoyed that Shen Yushu was willing to help. If he could get pointers from Shen Yushu, Gu Mengyao's best friend, then surely winning Gu Mengyao over was only a matter of days?
"Hmm..." Shen Yushu opened the blood letter and read it over. In truth, she had no real interest in the letter itself - she didn't have time for some worthless, styleless piece of rubbish like this. What she actually had in mind was a much better game.
"Well?" Zhong Yongliang gazed at Shen Yushu with hopeful anticipation, waiting for her verdict.
"Hey, why doesn't it have a signature? Who's going to know who wrote it if it doesn't?" Shen Yushu's eyes darted about, and she had finally found her opening.
"A signature?" Zhong Yongliang blinked in surprise. "This is my own blood letter - why would I need to sign it?"
"Obviously you would! Not signing it makes you look completely insincere!" Shen Yushu declared with a straight face. "Your love letter doesn't even have a signature - it's not the least bit formal. No wonder you've been chasing Sister Yaoyao all this time and still haven't won her over..."
At this, Shen Yushu pursed her lips and pulled a face of utter disdain.
Zhong Yongliang flew into a panic: "Is that so? Then I'll go back and add one - I'll add it right now!"
