Chapter 303 — The Little Divine Physician
"Good, good! I'll call him right away and have him come over." Guan Xuewen nodded. Wei Zhao was right — reading a case file was never as direct as seeing the patient. Having Wei Zhao consult on Old Master Liu's case would be far better than studying it alone.
"Oh? The patient is nearby?" Wei Zhao asked, somewhat surprised.
"Yes, he lives right here in this compound — only a few minutes by car. Quick enough..." With that, Guan Xuewen picked up the telephone on the writing desk and dialed a number.
In the faculty residential compound of Songshan Medical University, inside a luxurious villa that rivaled Guan Xuewen's own residence, a young man in his twenties was speaking indignantly to a middle-aged woman.
"Aunt, how can Sun Jingyan do this? She's treating our Wu family as if we were nothing! We Wus are a martial arts clan, after all — one of the Four Great *** Families. What does the Sun family amount to? Just an upstart clan. My going to propose was already doing the Suns a great favor, yet that old man of theirs doesn't know how to appreciate it. He says he doesn't want to meddle in the affairs of the young and tells me to make my own efforts!" The speaker was Wu Chengtian, the most promising youngster of the Wu family's younger generation, hailed as the "Little Wu Iron Hand."
"The Sun family's business has expanded aggressively these past years, and they've built up connections in political circles too. Upstarts they may be, but they're already qualified enough to stand shoulder to shoulder with the old established clans!" Liu Tianyi glared at his nephew.
"But Sun Jingyan and I grew up together! She's gone too far — taking up with some boyfriend behind everyone's back, and making a fool of me in public!" Wu Chengtian said resentfully. "If not for him, how would I have lost my wallet? How would I have ended up being looked down on?"
"All right, all right! Xiaotian, your aunt will help you!" Wu Huiru spoke up. "In any case, your uncle's father still needs to convalesce here for a while. Your aunt will set up a company for you, and show that Sun girl what the men of our Wu family are made of!"
"Thank you, Aunt..." Wu Chengtian was overjoyed. He had been at a loss in this unfamiliar city, but now, with his aunt's help, he was determined to build a career and show Sun Jingyan just how capable he was!
"Ring..." The telephone in the living room began to ring.
"Who could be calling at this hour? Tianyi, didn't I say to unplug the phone line at night? What if it disturbs Father's rest?" Wu Huiru complained at the sound of the ringing.
"Unplug it? What if there's an emergency?" Liu Tianyi shot his wife a glare.
"What emergency could there be? This landline came with the villa — it must be a wrong number looking for the previous owner!" Wu Huiru curled her lip. "Anyone who knows us would call our cell phones!"
"That's right, Uncle. Aunt has a point — just ignore it." Wu Chengtian had been happily discussing matters with his aunt, ready to work out in detail how, once the company was founded, he would win Sun Jingyan's heart — and now this blasted ringing had interrupted them.
Liu Tianyi frowned, ignored his wife and nephew, and picked up the phone. "Hello, good evening. This is Liu Tianyi."
"Tianyi? This is Guan Xuewen. Bring your father over now — I've invited a specialist, and we're going to hold a consultation for your father to see whether there's any hope of a cure." Guan Xuewen's voice came through from the other end.
"Yes, yes! Elder Guan, I'll bring Father over to visit right away! Thank you so much!" Hearing Guan Xuewen's words, Liu Tianyi nodded and thanked him repeatedly. That Guan Xuewen should take such pains over his father's illness filled Liu Tianyi with gratitude.
After all, although the Liu family was currently the most influential of the several great clans, that was largely because Old Master Liu Zhenhu was still alive and many people gave them face on his account. Once the old master was gone, the Liu family would surely drop a grade.
After hanging up, Liu Tianyi glared fiercely at his wife. "You nearly ruined something important! Elder Guan has invited a specialist to consult on Father's case — if we hadn't answered this call, could you bear the responsibility?"
"I'll go help Father downstairs right now!" Wu Huiru did not dare say more. Head lowered, she went upstairs. Over this period Liu Tianyi had grown more and more masterful, and Wu Huiru no longer dared to make a scene; she had become docile instead.
"Hmph! Be careful!" Liu Tianyi admonished.
"Chengtian, come help your grandfather Liu downstairs with me!" Wu Huiru shot Wu Chengtian a meaningful look. Old Master Liu was a man of consequence — if he took a liking to Wu Chengtian and put in a word for him with the Sun family, then surely the old man of the Suns could not refuse to show some respect.
Wu Chengtian understood at once and followed his aunt upstairs.
Ten minutes later, Old Master Liu Zhenhu came downstairs supported by Wu Huiru and her nephew Wu Chengtian. Liu Tianyi had long since brought the car around to the villa entrance; once they were in, he drove straight to Guan Xuewen's villa.
When Liu Zhenhu heard that a specialist had come to treat him, his former drowsiness vanished and his heart filled with hope. Even a man past seventy years of age hopes to live a few more years.
It was not that Liu Zhenhu clung to life out of cowardice, but rather that he could not quite let go of the Liu family's descendants.
Mother Liu opened the door for them and invited the Liu family inside the villa. Guan Xuewen and Wei Zhao were waiting on the sofa in the living room, but when Wei Zhao saw Liu Zhenhu, Liu Tianyi, and the others, he visibly started — he had not expected that the patient Guan Xuewen spoke of would be Liu Zhenhu!
Liu Tianyi's family also spotted Wei Zhao on the sofa and were likewise taken aback, yet excitement shone plainly on the faces of both Liu Zhenhu and Liu Tianyi! If Guan Xuewen had found this young divine physician, did that not mean the old man's illness might be cured?
Wu Chengtian's expression, however, was exceedingly grim! He had not expected to run into Wei Zhao here, and still less that Wei Zhao would be sitting together with Dr. Guan, the man treating Grandpa Liu!
He wanted to say something, but held himself back. This was neither the Wu household nor the Liu household, after all, and it was not his place to speak; he could only glare at Wei Zhao with resentment.
"Young divine physician! I never thought I'd see you here — this is wonderful!" Liu Tianyi was rather excited and stepped forward to grasp Wei Zhao's hand! Having heard Guan Xuewen praise Wei Zhao so highly earlier, Liu Tianyi had felt some regret; that day had been far too rushed, and he had failed to get the young man's contact information, a fact that had left him endlessly regretful.
Wei Zhao did not reach out to take Liu Tianyi's hand. Of this whole family, apart from the old man, whose words were at least pleasant to hear, Wei Zhao had not a single good impression of any of them.
