Chapter 253 — Could It Be That the Fake Has Become Real?
"..." Gu Mengyao truly did not know what to say. "You're not going to get your brother to beat him up?"
"Oh, Arrow Bro already copped a feel once when he pulled me out through the iron railing." Shen Yushu thought for a moment, her eyes darting about. "Yao-jie, how about we put this on account for now? If he behaves from here on out, we won't give him any trouble?"
"Mm, that's a good idea." Gu Mengyao naturally agreed. After all, the one who'd been felt up was Little Shu, not herself. If Little Shu didn't mind, what did she have to mind?
"Both times I was saving you!" Wei Zhao, however, was unwilling to let it go. He had saved Shen Yushu twice, and now this girl wanted to make trouble for him?
"Oh, then forget it — we'll call it even. But Arrow Bro, you have to come bungee jumping with us this weekend. I've never done it before, so come keep us company!" Shen Yushu didn't mind either; with a hold over Wei Zhao, the matter no longer seemed to matter.
"No problem..." Wei Zhao had meant to refuse, but then he thought: he had, after all, felt up Shen Yushu, and he'd flirted with the young lady's best friend right in front of her. It was lucky Gu Mengyao wasn't making trouble for him at all — what was a little bungee jumping?
Gu Mengyao could not fathom what was going through Shen Yushu's head. Only after Wei Zhao went off to eat did she quietly ask her, "Little Shu, do you really like Wei Zhao?"
"Huh? No..." Shen Yushu said indistinctly, eating her tangerine.
"No? And you let him feel you up?" Gu Mengyao frowned, sighing to herself. Her best friend must have been bewitched by Wei Zhao — otherwise, how could she have no reaction at all to being touched?
"He didn't mean to!" Shen Yushu felt a little strange herself... It seemed she wasn't averse to Arrow Bro? Being felt up, she didn't want to beat him up to vent her anger; instead she was more interested in the business of bungee jumping, as though being touched were no great matter at all...
"You..." Gu Mengyao did not know what to say. This best friend of hers... could it be that after confessing to Wei Zhao once, she had actually fallen for him? Had the two of them turned pretense into reality?
Zhang Tongtian, as before, sat with his legs crossed, the very picture of a man with victory in his grasp, and dialed Sun Jingyan's number.
"Hello? Miss Sun?" In Zhang Tongtian's eyes, Sun Jingyan was already meat in his mouth. Unless she never wanted to do business in Songshan City again, this time he would certainly ruin her reputation!
With Zhang Tongtian's connections in Songshan City, he knew many reporters from the news media. All he had to do was leak that video, and Sun Jingyan's company would be finished!
Not only would they face punishment from the relevant authorities — the key point was that no one would ever do business with their company again! Who would do business with such an unsafe company?
The procurement managers of those companies all held cushy posts; everyone knew how things worked. They could get kickbacks from any other company too, so why insist on Sun Jingyan's company, which could so easily be exposed?
Zhang Tongtian, however, did not know Sun Jingyan's background. In fact, when Sun Jingyan came alone to Songshan City, she had not intended to rely on her family's influence either. She had come here precisely to break away from the Sun family!
Sun Jingyan truly did not wish to think about the faces of those people in the Sun family. They were supposed to be one family, yet they fought to the death over Grandfather's estate. It was already like this before Grandfather had even died; once he passed, who knew what kind of mess they would stir up...
Sun Jingyan's parents had died early, and she had grown up with her grandfather. Merely because she was closer to him, the rest of the Sun family treated her as their number one enemy in the contest for the inheritance. This made Sun Jingyan miserable, and in the end she had no choice but to leave for another city and carve out a world of her own!
"President Zhang, is there something you need?" Having gotten the memory card, Sun Jingyan naturally no longer feared Zhang Tongtian. She answered the phone without her former nervousness, speaking in a leisurely tone.
"Miss Sun, have you forgotten? Today I am holding a small-scale press conference to expose to the reporters the inside story of certain companies in the trade that ignore business rules, disrupt industry order, and foster unhealthy practices!" Zhang Tongtian said. "Would Miss Sun be interested in gracing us with her presence?"
Zhang Tongtian sneered inwardly. Sun Jingyan, this is your last chance — don't be ungrateful. Otherwise, I'll air the video at the press conference and leave your company in utter disgrace!
"Oh? Since President Zhang has invited me, how could I not attend?" Sun Jingyan said faintly. "What time, and where?"
"Nine o'clock this morning, in my company's meeting room. I think Miss Sun had best come a little early to discuss the content of the press conference with me!" Zhang Tongtian hinted.
"I'm sorry, but I'm afraid I have a few things to take care of on my end, so I can't come early. It'll be a wonder if I even make it on time!" Sun Jingyan was puzzled. Zhang Tongtian hadn't noticed that the memory card was already gone? Why was he still acting so sure of victory? Could he have a backup?
Sun Jingyan had dared to have Wei Zhao risk stealing the memory card precisely because she knew Zhang Tongtian was a computer illiterate — he could not operate a computer or a camcorder to save his life. The recording had been made for him by a private investigator, and after watching it once, he had simply left it in the handbag he carried about with him.
Sun Jingyan had guessed right. To be on the safe side, Zhang Tongtian had taken a special look at the camcorder that morning, found the memory card still in place, and set his mind at ease. He could not work such a delicate contraption, so he never opened it to see what was on it.
Zhang Tongtian was a coarse man whose only talent lay in worming his way through personal connections. So although his company sold computers, he himself could not even have found the power button on one.
"Very well, I hope you won't regret this, Miss Sun!" Zhang Tongtian gave a cold snort and hung up, thinking: You bitch, don't say I didn't give you a chance — you'll be crying soon enough!
At nine o'clock, Sun Jingyan finally made a belated appearance in Zhang Tongtian's meeting room. Zhang Tongtian's face was dark, a ruthless glint flickering in his eyes. This woman certainly could keep her composure — though he wondered whether she would still keep it once she had watched the recording.
Zhang Tongtian had made up his mind: since Sun Jingyan was so blind to the favor he was doing her, so be it — he would simply have to let her taste the price of refusing him!
"Miss Sun, you're rather late." Zhang Tongtian gave Sun Jingyan a lukewarm nod.
"President Zhang, does it really matter whether I arrive early or late for your company's press conference?" Sun Jingyan said blandly.
"Very well then, Miss Sun, please take a seat." Zhang Tongtian gave a cold laugh and mounted the chairman's rostrum in the meeting room.
Most of these reporters had good relations with his company, and through their connections he had even invited the chief reporters of several major newspapers. One could well imagine how sensational this exposé would be!
