Chapter 167 — Two Unlucky Experts

The Blossom Guardian

Wei Zhao was quite capable of doing things for which there was no evidence. When the time came, Li Cihua would probably be crying without tears, wouldn't he?

Two Yellow Rank experts, dead just like that—unlucky enough, to be sure.

The van suddenly accelerated when it was twenty meters from Wei Zhao. He could even see the smug, sleazy grins on Li Yao's face in the driver's seat and Zhang Long's in the passenger seat. To Wei Zhao, though, those grins were like blossoming epiphyllum flowers—withered in an instant.

"Heh..." Wei Zhao smiled too, but his smile was strange, deeply meaningful...

"What's that kid smiling at?" Li Yao was baffled. Unconsciously he pressed harder on the gas—though in fact the pedal was already floored, and pressing further meant nothing.

"Who knows. Just run him over first," Zhang Long said, ordering Li Yao on. Wei Zhao's smile had made him thoroughly uncomfortable.

Wei Zhao acted as though he had not seen Li Yao accelerate at all. He still stood in the middle of the road like a warrior about to march to his death.

"Hey!" Li Yao saw that he was about to hit Wei Zhao, and a grin spread across his lips...

At the instant the van came hurtling at him, Wei Zhao abruptly dodged to the right, arriving at the side of Li Yao's driver's seat, and then kicked the van's front left tire...

With a huge bang, the van's front left tire burst outright. The vehicle lost its balance at once and veered left, sweeping in an arc past Wei Zhao, smashing through the guardrail along the national highway and plunging down into the ravine...

The van tumbled over and over in the air, then landed at the very bottom of the ravine. After a tremendous crash, flames flickered up in waves...

Wei Zhao glanced down into the ravine and waited a while. When no one emerged from the van—now burned almost beyond recognition—he turned to leave.

Of course, before leaving, he first pushed the sharp blade at the front of his shoe back into place.

Even with his great strength, Wei Zhao had no absolute certainty of kicking a moving tire until it burst; and even if he punctured it, he could not be sure it would deflate outright. Borrowing an outside force was the best method.

A blade had always been hidden in Wei Zhao's shoe. He had modified it on a whim back when he used to watch the anime Detective Conan. It was not of much use, but under particular circumstances it could play an absolutely decisive role.

Just now, for instance: Wei Zhao needed only to stretch out his foot, then hold his body and leg steady with enough composure, and the blade was more than enough to shred a spinning tire to pieces.

Of course, only Wei Zhao dared attempt such a dangerous thing. An ordinary person would likely have lost his footing and had his own foot shredded first.

Two Yellow Rank experts—one at the early stage, one at the peak of the late stage. In Songshan City they counted as experts among experts. To die just like this really was a bit unjust, wasn't it?

Wei Zhao gazed down at the van at the bottom of the cliff, burned beyond all recognition, and shook his head with a sigh. He wondered what Li Cihua would feel upon learning that both his Yellow Rank experts had died this way.

What would gall him most, perhaps, was that he had no way at all to prove whether these two had been killed by Wei Zhao himself. The scene looked exactly like a traffic accident—this was what Li Cihua called the struggles of the upper class, was it? Even knowing Wei Zhao had done it, without evidence he could not prove it.

And even if Li Cihua came to Wei Zhao, Wei Zhao would play the innocent and claim to know nothing, creating for Li Cihua the illusion that these two wretches had simply had bad luck—a blowout, a plunge off the cliff—and let him stew in his own frustration until he choked on it.

Going for wool and coming home shorn—only Li Cihua himself could know that feeling.

Wei Zhao turned and walked over to Shen Yushu's Beetle, got in, started the engine, and drove off toward the villa district.

This was a stretch of national highway in poor condition, with no streetlights at night, so few cars ever passed through. Wei Zhao had not seen a single vehicle in all this time, and he was not worried about anyone discovering him.

When Wei Zhao got back to the villas, the lights were blazing inside. He did not put the car back in Shen Yushu's garage, but parked it in the courtyard of Gu Mengyao's villa.

It just so happened that Wei Zhao had no car to drive, so for the time being he would borrow the little girl Shen Yushu's car. He doubted she would object.

Perhaps because someone had heard the sound of the car pulling into the villa's courtyard, the front door swung open—though the one who opened it was neither Gu Mengyao nor Shen Yushu, but Uncle Qing.

"Mr. Lin, you're back," Uncle Qing said with a nod to Wei Zhao.

"Uncle Qing, you're still here?" Wei Zhao was somewhat surprised. Dealing with those two Yellow-rank experts had taken him all the way out to the national highway, easily close to an hour, and yet Uncle Qing had still not gone home.

Ordinarily, after Uncle Qing drove Gu Mengyao and Shen Yushu to the villa, he would simply leave.

"Mr. Gu is here as well. Please come in quickly, Mr. Lin," Uncle Qing said to Wei Zhao.

"Oh? Uncle Chu is here too?" What surprised Wei Zhao even more was that Gu Pengzhan would actually come to the villa so late at night.

Wei Zhao followed Uncle Qing inside, and there he saw Gu Mengyao and Shen Yushu sitting on the large sofa with their heads lowered, the very picture of well-behaved children, while on the small sofa to one side Gu Pengzhan was lecturing them with a dark face. Only when he caught sight of Wei Zhao did a trace of a smile squeeze onto his face: "Xiaoyi, you're back. Come, sit down."

Gu Mengyao glanced at Wei Zhao with a look of grievance. Shen Yushu had been right—Daddy's attitude toward him was unbelievably good, so good it was practically excessive; he was never like this with her. When she came home, she got a thorough scolding, yet when Wei Zhao came home, Daddy was all smiles.

If she did not know her father's character so well, she would truly have thought Wei Zhao was his illegitimate son.

If not for Wei Zhao, would she have been in such a bad mood that she went drinking? Besides... she had not taken a single sip.

And yet the treatment she and Wei Zhao received was as different as heaven and earth. She really could not fathom what Daddy was thinking, being so good to such a flippant, shameless womanizer. If she were to tell him about how this man flirted with other women at school and in bars, she wondered whether Daddy would still treat him this way.

Of course, Gu Mengyao only thought about it. These words she could not bring herself to say, nor would she have the nerve to say them.

"Xiaoyi, you've had a hard time. We owe tonight's affair to you," Gu Pengzhan said to Wei Zhao with a smile.

"It was nothing, Uncle Chu." Wei Zhao smiled. "Truthfully, I didn't do much."

"These two girls just won't listen. Old Chen entrusted his daughter to me, and I've failed to look after her properly—running off with Yaoyao to stir up trouble..." Gu Pengzhan said. "If not for you, I really don't know what might have happened."

"Ha, Uncle Chu, tonight's business really isn't Miss Gu's fault, nor Xiaoshu's." Looking at the aggrieved Gu Mengyao and the indifferent Shen Yushu, Wei Zhao explained to Gu Pengzhan.
