Chapter 124 — They Came Knocking

The Blossom Guardian

"Liangzi, what are you thinking about?" Zhong Yongliang was still stewing in resentment when a slap landed on his shoulder. He turned around to find Zou Ruoming standing there.

"Oh, Brother Ming, nothing..." How could Zhong Yongliang ever admit his own embarrassments?

"Oh... well..." In fact, Zou Ruoming couldn't be bothered to ask Zhong Yongliang about his petty troubles. He had other business: "Liangzi, let me ask you something. That Wei Zhao in your class, where exactly does he come from?"

Zou Ruoming hated Wei Zhao to the bone, and compared to Zhong Yongliang, his loathing went even further. He had been on the verge of winning the girl and forcing Tang Zhi to make her choice that Friday, only to have it all ruined by that thing called Wei Zhao. It made Zou Ruoming seethe.

Still, he hadn't dared act rashly. He'd been slapped by Wei Zhao and hadn't dared say a word about it! Because of what happened with Brother Heibao before, Zou Ruoming was somewhat stunned!

He wanted to see how someone with Zhong Yongliang's family background would handle the matter. So he hadn't gone directly to cause trouble for Wei Zhao. Although his family was comfortably well-off, their business wasn't as large as Zhong Fabai's. It was just that his brother, Zou Ruoguang, was a local strongman in the North District, with some ruthless men under him.

But what disappointed him was that, after waiting several days, the Zhong family hadn't made any response. After Brother Heibao went in, there was no word about getting him out either; presumably he was going to be sentenced. This left Zou Ruoming puzzled - what kind of background did Wei Zhao really have?

"Wei Zhao? Just a migrant worker!" Zhong Yongliang said with disdain. He had never once considered that his own father had been a migrant worker himself, so he'd inadvertently insulted his old man along with it.

"A migrant worker?" Zou Ruoming thought his ears had gone bad. How could he be a migrant worker? A migrant worker coming here to attend high school? What kind of international joke was that?

"He transferred in later. His hometown is supposedly somewhere deep in the mountains. On the day he first enrolled, he was wearing tattered rags, not far off a migrant worker." Zhong Yongliang's eyes lit up as he explained. Then he suddenly realized - why was Zou Ruoming asking about Wei Zhao out of nowhere? Could it be that he wanted to make a move against Wei Zhao? He hadn't heard of any grudge between Zou Ruoming and Wei Zhao either!

"Is that so..." Then how come you took such a big loss the other day and didn't do anything to get back at him?" Zou Ruoming didn't quite believe Zhong Yongliang's words. After all, if Wei Zhao really was just a migrant worker as Zhong Yongliang claimed, how could he remain so passive after suffering such a huge defeat?

"Don't even mention it..." Zhong Yongliang shook his head with a bitter smile. "Just for calling Brother Heibao out on my own, I got chewed out by my old man. You know how it is - my dad doesn't approve of me causing trouble at school. And I'm no match for that Wei Zhao kid myself. He's got rural training, monstrous strength; there's nothing I can do against him!" Zhong Yongliang could hear it too - something was clearly going on between Zou Ruoming and Wei Zhao, though he didn't know the details. But that didn't stop him from stoking the flames. If Zou Ruoming moved to teach Wei Zhao a lesson, he certainly wouldn't object.

"So that's how it is... in other words, Wei Zhao has no real social connections?" What Zou Ruoming feared most was that Wei Zhao had a formidable family background and that messing with him would come back to haunt him.

"I didn't see any..." "Hey, Brother Ming, why do you keep asking about this kid?" Zhong Yongliang pretended not to understand what Zou Ruoming was getting at.

"Oh, nothing. Just curious - curious!" Zou Ruoming said. "I'm off now; the guys called me to play basketball." Zhong Yongliang curled his lip. Curious? Curious, my ass. Still, it looked as though Zou Ruoming was going to make a move, and that was good news indeed.

"Oh, all right." Wei Zhao knew Wang Zhifeng was putting on a strict front in front of Kang Xiaofeng. Their relationship was rather improper, but it couldn't be exposed. He patted Kang Xiaofeng on the shoulder: "You go on ahead to morning exercises. The director needs me for something."

"All right..." Although Kang Xiaofeng was somewhat worried, with the director standing right there, he didn't dare ask too many questions and had to head off on his own first.

After Kang Xiaofeng left, Wei Zhao finally asked, "What's going on, Director Wang?"

"It's like this. Captain Yang from the Criminal Investigation Division at the police station is here. He wants to see you about something..." Wang Zhifeng smiled ruefully. "I'd say it's probably about last week's incident. Be careful, and don't say anything off the mark. Whatever they ask, just say you don't know - that'll do. As for anything else, I'll handle it on behalf of the school."

Wang Zhifeng was genuinely decent, volunteering to shoulder the responsibility for Wei Zhao. It seemed he truly wanted to build a good relationship with him. There was the factor of Wei Zhao having caught him in his private affairs that day, but there was also the factor of Gu Pengzhan.

"Heh... all right." As soon as Wei Zhao heard that Yang Huaijun had come, he knew it couldn't be about last week's incident. Nine times out of ten, the prescription he had given him was working - and the man couldn't hold back and had come knocking on his door.

Still, the timing was rather convenient. Under normal circumstances, a criminal investigation captain showing up at a school out of the blue to see a student would certainly arouse suspicion. But with last week's incident as cover, no one would think anything of it.

The two arrived at the Academic Affairs Office. Wang Zhifeng pushed the door open first and called inside: "Captain Yang, I've brought student Wei Zhao over. But we agreed beforehand - asking questions is fine, but if you want to take anyone away, I must notify the principal first..."

"It's just asking a few questions!" Captain Yang smiled. "Director Wang, don't worry. We won't cause any trouble for your work. Tell you what... how about stepping out for a moment?"

"In that case, go ahead and talk." Wang Zhifeng nodded, let Wei Zhao in, and then stepped out of the Academic Affairs Office, pulling the door shut behind him.

"So? The prescription I gave you works well enough, doesn't it?" Once Wang Zhifeng had stepped out, Wei Zhao dropped casually onto the sofa nearby and asked.

"Ying, you're incredible! That prescription actually works better than those painkillers!" Yang Huaijun punched Wei Zhao excitedly, but Wei Zhao deftly and imperceptibly dodged it.

"Call me Wei Zhao," Wei Zhao corrected him.

"Fine, Wei Zhao it is, Wei Zhao!" Yang Huaijun did not mind; a name was only a code name. "Wei Zhao, there's something I have to apologize to you for. That prescription you gave me, I—haha—I let the doctor treating me see it... But he promised not to pass it on."

"Heh, let him see it. It can help more people too." Wei Zhao smiled, not minding Yang Huaijun's actions in the least. "What did he say?"
